Construction Begins at McCarthy, Walker Roads in Lemont

Also this week: "Be the Match" donor drive, Lemont Farmers Market and the Lemont Park District's "Pack the Park."

Construction is finally set to begin Monday at Lemont's busy McCarthy-Walker Road intersection.

Village officials said motorists should expect delays as construction begins this week. All businesses will remain open.

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced in March that it will contribute about $1.7 million through its Illinois Jobs Now! program to upgrade the intersection of McCarthy and Walker roads.

The work will involve the modernization of the traffic lanes and signals at the intersection, located about one-half mile west of Archer Avenue.

The village is expected to kick in about $60,000 for the project, which has been in the works for five years.

"The McCarthy-Walker Road project will undoubtedly enhance the traffic flow and safety of an important intersection in Lemont," Illinois Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) said earlier this year. "It is a good example of state leaders working together to better our community and create well-paying jobs throughout Illinois."

During the July 22 village board meeting, Lemont Public Works Director Ralph Pukula said IDOT has 65 days to complete the project, which means all road work should be finished by the end of October.
