  • On the article Should DUI Alcohol Limit Be Lowered To 0.05 Percent?

I sometimes think the problem is we group ALL people together. My point is that the boozer will continue to drink and drive and exceed any limit we legislate. I'd like to see a stat on that group of people. Likely they cause the majority of accidents that kill. I would like to assume then that the one or two drink people enjoying an occasional cocktail at dinner with friends are in a group where road kills are minimal. So, following that logic...boozers will exceed limits no matter what and good people will only be hurt by tightening up the law. Let it stand where it is!

OOPS...now I know what the execs were up to....the Head of this company is none other than the guy who could not spell potatoe ...potato... our former Vice President. Interestingly, the company is an investment group the buys up distressed properties. Does this mean Jewel is in trouble?

They should color certain handles on carts. If that cart is selected by a senior or disabled person they would get the "out the door to the car service." That makes more sense to me than forcing customers who do not want this service into it. Sometimes I wonder what these corporate execs are thinking!

Wow...237 Schools who have competing teams. Lemont is always looking for something to do with it's resources to bring people into town... maybe time to look at stocking the quarries and bringing those fishermen here.

Well, in fact, there is little you can do to prevent a driver from texting or talking on their cell phone while driving or simply not paying attention.. The temptation is great to want to put a stop sign/s before those cross walks...a fold up that comes down in "off hours." But then it is a State Road and that may not be allowed. Another idea I like is to clearly mark the cross walks and put signage that says you must stop for people in the cross walk. Add to that a button a person can push just before walking across the street which will activate a camera that takes a picture of the lic plate of any vehicle crossing that walk way when a pedestrian is in it. Fine..$500.00 Some day they will link the cell phones to the GPS system so it can detect motion. When motion is detected...texting and conversation is disabled. That would save a lot of lives!

Kids are like horses...when their heads go up the brain falls out of gear! The ability to drive a vehicle, I think, is better when you are a kid than when you are a senior. The difference is seniors have the wisdom not to raise their heads and let their brains fall out of gear...meaning judgement, good sense and no need to show off. If you did a good job as a parent the kid should already have those instincts and will only develop them to a stronger degree with the passing of more time.

  • On the article Would An Internet Sales Tax Law Help DuPage's Local Businesses?

    Edward Andrysiak

Originally the "sales tax" was called Retailers occupation Tax. It was imposed on the seller, collected by same and paid over to the State regardless of where the seller shipped/sold the product. This I learned from my grandmother who ran a deli back in the 1940's. The politicians jacked with that and made it the system it is today which now seems not to work for them. Maybe we need to go back to the original intent and tax the seller. To be sure it will be added to the selling price but it will be buried in a higher selling price. The buyer will never see it as we do today. Collecting then is simple...it is done by the State and paid by the seller to his State on ALL sales. It is true that States with low or no tax have an advantage. It is also true that "advantages" of one kind or another give businesses a leg up...one over the other. That is the way the system in a free economy works. Politicians are dumb beasts...they screwed this up over the years and don't know how to fix it in a simple way.

What nice wording by the publisher here..."misusing the technology." Why not tell us the truth. The reason he banned cameras and such was because the gang bangers were taking pictures of people testifying against them and harassing them later to not testify or change their story...or else!

A very sad event. I say a prayer daily for these wonderful people. I add a small prayer as well for the driver for if this was a result of texting or cell phone use causing a distraction, it will forever prey on the mind. Bless them all.

Are you sure about your statement? I seem to remember that it was Jim Thompson, whose mother was a teacher, that worked with the teachers unions to set up their generous pensions.
