Unemployment Report: Cook County Jobless Rate Rises Slightly

As more jobs become available, more jobseekers begin to search again causing unemployment rates to increase, according to officials.

Unemployment rates in Illinois rose slightly from January 2013 to February, to 10.5 percent and are a percent point higher from the same time in 2012, according to new figures released last week.  During the month of February, Illinois saw job growth in five metro areas and declines in seven metro areas, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Illinois Department of Employment Security. While unemployment numbers have increased slightly in Illinois, the increase comes as the state added more than 12,400 jobs in February, a three-year job growth trend in the state, and more people sought work, according to officials with the Illinois Department of Employment Security. With a fiscal cliff looming, the Department of Employment Security said last month that a solution was necessary to help improve jobless rates.

Although unemployment is down from this time compared to last year, numbers slightly increased from September 2012 to October.

The U-3 are the numbers always used, and it's an apples-to-apples comparison. It went from 8.9 in Oct '11 to 7.9 in Oct'12. If you want to use the U-4 numbers including "discouraged workers", it still went down - from 9.5 to 8.4.   more ›

Illinois Unemployment Rates Drop Across the Board in September

In the south suburbs, the unemployment rate dropped from August to September this year and is generally below the state average, according to data released last week.
