GOP Candidates Talk Taxes in Plainfield

Republicans warn of “January surprise” if Gov. Pat Quinn pushes his pension cost shift plan through.

Republican candidates staged a press conference in Plainfield Thursday afternoon to voice their opposition to property tax increases and a plan by Gov. Pat Quinn to shift teacher pension costs to local school districts. State Sen. Republican Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) and House Republican Leader Tom Cross (R-Oswego) joined candidates Garrett Peck and Bob Kalnicky at the Plainfield home of Vicki and Ernie Knight. In a press release, the candidates said Quinn’s proposal will mean higher local property taxes by shifting the state’s estimated $44 billion teachers pension burden onto school districts. “Everyone has begun to recognize — finally — that Illinois has the worst-funded pension retirement system in the country and a …

Committeeman Nominee Says Illinois Republican Party 'is a Joke'

One of three nominees for Republican National Committeeman for Illinois urged delegates to "give the people their party back" in what he says was a weekend filled with unfair voting with rigged outcomes.

After he said delegates were "robbed of their opportunity to vote" during the Illinois Republican Convention in Tinley Park, William "Bill" Kelly insisted that they get their $50 ticket entry fee back. "Rarely in life do we actually say what we mean because we are afraid of what we might lose," Kelly said before an election committee Friday afternoon. "But we have lost too much already and we are on the brink of losing it all. … The Illinois Republican party is a joke."  Kelly, a Beverly native now living in the Streeterville neighborhood in Chicago, faced off over the weekend against two others, incumbent Rich Williamson and Alexander "Sandy" Stuart, for the title of Republican National Committeeman for Illinois. Appointed to the …

No Direct Elections, No Gambling: 2012 Illinois Republican Convention

Despite impassioned speeches about opening up the Illinois GOP, the Platform and Resolutions Committee voted against sending the return of direct elections for state committeemen to the floor. Read our live blog transcript for more details.

Update, 10 p.m., Friday, June 8, 2012  Illinois Republicans hoping to have more of a say in the state party's processes will have to wait another four years for another swing at it. While McLean County Republicans Chairman John Parrott rallied the packed room at the Platform and Resolutions Committee meeting Friday, during the Illinois State GOP Convention in Tinley Park, the votes fell short for direct elections of state committeemen and won't go to the full delegate floor Saturday.  Those in favor of the election said it would energize the state's Republicans, bring them back into the process and eventually turn Illinois back to red. And those against said the money needed to campaign would only corrupt another process further, and other…

Lipinski Wins Landslide Primary Over Baqai

With nearly 90 percent of the vote, incumbent Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Western Springs) has easily cruised by challenger Farah Baqai.

Incumbent Democratic 3rd District Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Western Springs) easily won the Democratic nomination to run for his fifth term in Congress on Tuesday, defeating challenger Farah Baqai by a vote margin of nearly 9-1. Baqai was challenging the moderate Lipinski from the left, but stood virtually no chance against a Lipinski name that is a perennial force in Cook County Democratic politics. “Tomorrow we go back to work—the work never ends,” Lipinski told supporters in Chicago’s Garfield Ridge. “I’m working to make sure that people who do bring a hard day’s work [and] who play by the rules get rewarded. That’s the most important thing. That’s what I stand for, and that’s why today we’ve come through with a big victory with your help.” …
