More than 50 volunteers turned out before and on Christmas Day to cook, donate, pack and deliver dinners and care boxes to local families in need. “For the seventh year, friends were asked to offer what they could to create Christmas dinners and care boxes for friends who could use the gift,” said Terri O’Neill-Borders of the Hope and Friendship Foundation. “This year, 74 homes received deliveries packed with TLC and delivered from friends to friends in the beautiful and wonderful spirit of Christmas. Thank you for every single offering, donation, and gift of hands and feet that made this act of kindness possible.” With this story, O’Neill-Borders’ son, Jordan Bielfeldt, shares photos he snapped at the packing/distribution event at the …

The Hope and Friendship Foundation is once again assisting those in need over the holidays – and is seeking help from the community to share, donate, cook and volunteer. “I am determined that Hope and Friendship will better Christmas for hundreds of friends within our arm’s reach,” said the foundation’s founder/organizer, Terri O’Neill-Borders. “I am predicting we easily surpass 60 home deliveries and provide a fully cooked Christmas dinner for at least 300 friends.” To help Hope and Friendship achieve that goal, O’Neill-Borders asks, “How can you jump-start that Christmas spirit that is within you?” Here are a few suggestions for how you can help: Shop and donate “Care Box” items through Dec. 21 The Hope and Friendship Foundation plans to…

Volunteers met at the Lemont Township offices Tuesday afternoon to pack up turkeys, side dishes and desserts to distribute to 78 Lemont homes. The turkeys and all the trimmings that filled the big, blue bags were donated by friends of the Hope and Friendship Foundation from throughout the community. Hope and Friendship Foundation founder Terri O’Neill-Borders thanked volunteers for the “amazing acts of kindness they made possible” by assembling and distributing the meals to help so many local families enjoy a happy Thanksgiving. O’Neill-Borders said that by Tuesday night, she had already received emails, calls and texts of gratitude from recipients of the meals, including the following message: "Dear Hope and Friendship, so happy you sent …

Terri O’Neill-Borders of the Hope and Friendship Foundation said that when she offered to help local families in need enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner this year, she expected to get 15 to 20 requests. But she said the humble requests kept mounting, until they reached more than 50. “I didn’t expect the many recent layoffs, the sick kids causing a single mom/dad to miss work days and pay, the health scare that created doctor and prescription bills, etc.,” said O’Neill-Borders. “Those who are trying to run their households at the minimum wage and just above level do not have resources for these crises. They also don’t have an extra $15 for a turkey, but would love to enjoy one.” O’Neill-Borders said she was fretting over how to come up…

Dark skies, rain, wind and hail didn’t appear to dampen shoppers’ spirits Saturday at the township’s annual market to benefit Lemont families in need.
Mother Nature may have brought dark skies, rain, wind and hail to Lemont Saturday – but shoppers appeared unfazed as they browsed the products from more than 30 vendors and crafters at the Neighbor the Neighbor Vendor and Crafters’ Market at the Lemont Township Community Center. Organizer Terri O’Neill-Borders started the market so stay-at-home moms and other crafters and vendors who were trying to supplement their incomes could gather in one place, make more contacts and have a chance to sell some of their wares. The market featured a variety of items made by local crafters such as knitted scarves and crocheted necklaces, ribbon creations, baked goods, painted prints, Christmas stockings and crafts, jewelry, bath salts, candles and dog …

Upcoming opportunities include "Sushi for Shoes" at Kitaro Grill, Keepataw Days and the annual Community Rummage Sale.
The Lemont-based Hope and Friendship Foundation is seeking volunteers and donations for several upcoming events and charity drives. Hope and Friendship founder Terri O'Neill-Borders sent the following message Monday night: "As we turn the corner and begin to enter another fall and school year, I ask that you remember those within our community who are unable to afford the necessities that absorb a good portion of your household income: school supplies, school shoes/clothes, home needs and within a few months winter clothing, Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas gifts and more. Every single donation your have and can offer (monetary donations or gently used furniture, clothes, etc.) fills a void in a home that truly needs and appreciates you …
