The National Honor Society will be collecting used bikes from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday in the St. Patrick Church parking lot.
The National Honor Society at St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School in Lemont is collecting used bikes for local families in need. The school will hold a bike drive from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Church Bikes will be distributed to needy families in the Lemont area, organizers said. Congressman joins students, staff in celebration of Catholic Schools Week.

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (IL-3) marked National Catholic Schools Week by visiting St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School in Lemont. The congressman toured several classrooms, talked with students about his experience in Catholic schools and answered their questions about his work as their representative. Lipinski spoke to a school assembly on the importance of education and presented St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick Principal Renee Payne with an American flag that had flown over the U.S. Capitol building. The Lemont grade school will host local Italian restaurants, live entertainment and a cooking competition from 4 p.m. to midnight at Bottles.
St. Alphonus/St. Patrick School will host a new Italian-themed fundraiser Saturday in downtown Lemont. "Festa Italiana" will be held from 4 p.m. to midnight at Bottles, 439 Talcott Ave., and will feature Italian fare from La Dolce Vita, Mama D's and Papa Joe's. Live entertainment will be provided by Frank Sinatra crooners "Afterglow" at 7 p.m. and Bon Jovi cover band "Slippery When Wet" at 9 p.m. The event will kick off with the "Godmother Throwdown Cooking Competition," a feast of Italian favorites prepared by more than 20 local family chefs. Students from St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School will walk 12 hours with the "Celtics for a Cure Junior" team at the Lemont-Homer Glen event this July.
Students from St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School in Lemont celebrated a special group of moms this Mother's Day while raising money for Relay for Life. On Friday, several families gathered at the home of Brendan and Melissa McGuire, where seven boys shaved their heads to honor the moms and loved ones who lost their hair during cancer treatments. The boys are participating in the eighth annual Relay for Life of Lemont-Homer Glen as part of Team Celtics for a Cure Junior— an offshoot of their parents' Team Celtics for a Cure. So far the team has more more than a dozen students from St. Al's/St. Pat's. The event will be held Saturday at Bobak's Signature Events in Woodridge, and will benefit academic programs at the Lemont grade school.
Parents and supporters of St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School will travel back to the 1980s this weekend to raise money for the school's academic programs. The Lemont grade school will host its sixth annual Winter Gala, "Crazy for You," on Saturday from 6 p.m. to midnight at Bobak's Signature Events at Seven Bridges, 6440 Double Eagle Drive in Woodridge. Guests are invited to dress up in their best '80s attire (big hair included), and dance the night away to the music of Madonna and Billy Idol. The event will include raffles, a silent auction and a photo booth. All funds raised will go toward the promotion of educational standards that tuition alone cannot cover.
