Students from St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School will walk 12 hours with the "Celtics for a Cure Junior" team at the Lemont-Homer Glen event this July.
Students from St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School in Lemont celebrated a special group of moms this Mother's Day while raising money for Relay for Life. On Friday, several families gathered at the home of Brendan and Melissa McGuire, where seven boys shaved their heads to honor the moms and loved ones who lost their hair during cancer treatments. The boys are participating in the eighth annual Relay for Life of Lemont-Homer Glen as part of Team Celtics for a Cure Junior— an offshoot of their parents' Team Celtics for a Cure. So far the team has more more than a dozen students from St. Al's/St. Pat's. Monday marked the start of Teacher Appreciation Week across the United States, and Patch wants to pay tribute to all of the hardworking, dedicated teachers in Lemont. Schools will be celebrating in all sorts of ways all week long. I thought it might be fun to honor those that you trust with your children 35 hours a week, nine months a year. So, with that in mind I’d like to invite everyone to give a shout-out to your kids’ current teacher or one who has made a difference in their lives or education. Whether your student attends school in Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A, Lemont High School District 210, Everest Academy, St. Al's/St. Pat's or St. Cyril's, we want to hear from you. Show your appreciation in the comments below.

The school's National Junior Honor Society led students in fourth through fifth grade in an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet last week.

On Friday, however, students at St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School learned firsthand the inequalities associated with food distribution worldwide. The school's National Junior Honor Society, composed of 22 seventh-and eighth-grade students, hosted a Hunger Banquet developed by Oxfam America, an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger and injustice. The Hunger Banquet is the signature event of Oxfam, and is designed to bring attention to poverty and hunger issues through first-hand experience and stories from around the world.
