Silver Cross Sleep Disorders Center Offers Relief to Sleepless Nights.
For over two decades every night 63 year-old Darrell Holmquist’s sleep was always interrupted. His road to a restful sleep was discovered in an unusual way because Darrell wasn’t overweight, didn’t smoke or over indulge in alcohol, which are many of the common causes to sleepless nights. His optometrist recommended Darrell to see his primary care physician after learning of his sleepless nights and then discovering the blood vessels behind his eyes were in poor condition. “I have glaucoma and I recently learned that research has shown a link with people who have glaucoma and those who sleep poorly,” said Holmquist, who retired after 33 years of teaching history at Joliet Central and Lincoln-Way East and Central High Schools. “So I …

Dr. Robyn Vargo hosts free Total Ankle Replacement talk May 7.
Ankle arthritis can be caused by a prior injury, wear and tear, deformity or acute inflammatory conditions such as Rheumatoid arthritis or infection. Not all women with fibroids experience symptoms such as pain and heavy menstrual bleeding. But those who do have symptoms often find fibroids hard to live with.

RIC at Silver Cross Hospital offer Free Screenings in April
Carpal tunnel syndrome can make life miserable. The compression of a nerve in the wrist can make a movement painful, creating numbness and pain up the arm and into the shoulder. Even sleep becomes impossible because of the constant pain. “Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the palm of the hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist,” says Barbara Shoemaker, occupational therapist with The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) at Silver Cross Hospital. “The median nerve controls sensations to the palm side of the thumb and fingers as well as impulses to some small muscles in the hand that allow the fingers and thumb to move. The carpal tunnel, which is a narrow, rigid passageway …

During the month of March, Silver Cross Hospital is offering free colon cancer screening kits.
Many consider it a man’s disease. Yet half of those diagnosed with colorectal cancer each year are women. And about half of those women will die from it. This cancer is highly curable if caught at an early stage. Even better, certain preventative measures can reduce risk from the disease in the first place. “Ninety percent of colorectal cancer cases can be cured when found and treated at an early stage, so regular screenings are important,” said Riten Sheth, M.D., gastroenterologist on staff at Silver Cross Hospital. Risk Increases with Age The majority of colon cancer cases begin as small benign growths—called polyps—that can become cancerous over time. Polyps may appear in either the colon or the rectum, both of which are part of the …
