Obama Orders Half-Staff Flags in Wake of 'Senseless' Colorado Shooting

The president issued a proclamation Friday ordering that flags in the U.S. be lowered to half-staff through part of next week.

U.S. President Barack Obama is asking citizens and government centers to lower their flags to half-staff in honor of the victims of Friday's shooting in a Colorado movie theater. The move intends to pay respect to the 71 wounded and dozen killed at midnight Friday, when police say 24-year-old James Holmes entered a theater in suburban Denver as it was debuting "The Dark Knight Rises" and opened fire. "At first he was just a silhouette, taken by some in the audience for a stunt that was part of one of the summer's most highly anticipated films," according to a Huffington Post story. "But then, authorities said, he threw gas canisters that filled the packed ... theater with smoke, and, in the confusing haze between Hollywood fantasy and …

AMC Bans Facemasks, Prop Guns After Batman Movie Shooting

The ban on face-concealing masks and toy weapons is in response to the Colorado massacre during "The Dark Knight Rises" on Friday.

In light of the shooting spree in a Colorado movie theater during the premiere of "The Dark Knight Rises," the large movie chain AMC Theaters has issued a ban on certain costumes and props on its property. Previous media reports regarding this action said that the company had completely banned costumes from their theaters. AMC Theaters has recently released a statement clarifying what items they will no longer permit to be worn to their theaters. "We will not admit guests with face-concealing masks and we will not allow fake weapons in the buildings," said an official announcement on the AMC Theaters Facebook page. "We want all our guests to feel comfortable at our theatres and we will be closely monitoring. One of the villains in the …

Jeff Ward: How to Scare Your Boyfriend Without Using a Shotgun

I may be a gender traitor, but I don't want to get shot, either!

Every now and then, the magnitude of an event in one of our 22 happy Friday Patch suburbs makes me sit up and take notice. And let me tell you, when the fine folks in Downers Grove set out to pique my interest, they go all in. Let’s just say, were I an inhabitant of that fine municipality and my wife, girlfriend, or maybe even my sister, asked me to do the dishes, people would say they’d never seen an old guy move that fast. I’d be practicing my best “yes dears” 24/7. Vickie D. Podruzek, 43, currently faces charges of aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery with a firearm and may ultimately be charged with attempted murder. DuPage County Judge Elizabeth Sexton set her bail at $1 million. If she does manage to post bond, Podruzek…

This was rather funny, but would we be laughing if the story went the other way? If it was a woman a man was trying to change by shooting with a shotgun? I'm old school. I would rather see the dad in Father Knows Best rather than Everybody Loves Raymond.   more ›

In this particular situation, I might pull over. I would be afraid of being run off the road and into a tree in the middle of the woods by a truck that was chasing me, or trying to run me off the road... Apologize or fight? I can tell you at 50 years old I'm not looking for a fight, and at 58 this guy probably isnt looking to fight a "20-30 year old". Maybe you young fellows think different... …   more ›
