Letter to the Editor: Illinois Congressmen Weigh in on ‘Fiscal Cliff’ Solutions

Robert J. Dold (R-IL 10) and Daniel Lipinski (D-IL 3) present a bipartisan plan to avert the so-called fiscal cliff and put country on path to fiscal responsibility.

Editor’s note: Rep. Daniel Lipinski's office today shared this letter to the editor in an email to Lemont Patch. Lipinski prefaced the letter with the following statement: “In today’s Chicago Tribune, my colleague Rep. Robert Dold (IL-10) and I weigh in with a plan to avert the fiscal cliff, reduce our debt and get the country on the path to fiscal sustainability. Together we have been working with a bipartisan group of representatives on a ‘grand bargain’ to place a down payment on our debt before year's end, while putting a framework in place for larger reforms in early 2013 that would reduce the deficit by $4 trillion. More suggested mandates and additional triggers. I am begining to think the Simpson-Bowles remedy is what was agreed upon and what we should do. It will raise taxes and cut spending! That is what we need to do. We are in a recession anyway. Going in a little deeper may not be too bitter a pill. The worst part of S-B is the military cuts.
