Sgt. Rich Trujillo of the Illinois Army National Guard surprised his 11-year-old daughter Angela on Wednesday after a year-long deployment in Kuwait.
Angela Trujillo has been dreaming of her dad's homecoming for the past year. She's seen countless videos of soldiers surprising their kids at school, and always hoped it would happen to her. On Wednesday, Anglea's wish came true. Sgt. Rich Trujillo, of Lemont, was one of 175 Illinois Army National Guard soldiers to return home Wednesday morning after a year-long deployment in Kuwait. His wife, Tonya, greeted him at Midway Airport before heading to Old Quarry Middle School to surprise 11-year-old Angela, who thought her dad was returning Friday. More than 100 prints, paintings and sculptures created by Lemont middle school students will be on display April 12-28.
The Lemont Center for the Arts will highlight orignal works created by Old Quarry Middle School art students with a gallery opening Friday, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The exhibit, curated by Old Quarry art teacher Jean Dorrance, includes more than1 00 prints, paintings, plaques and clay sculptures. The collection will be on display in the gallery space through April 28. Dorrance partnered with the Arts and Culture Commission of Lemont to promote the students’ work. The gallery is open to the public Fridays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All artwork in the exhibit is available for sale, and proceeds will benefit the School District 113A Educational Foundation. The Old Quarry Middle School eighth-grade girls basketball team captured the Southeast DuPage Elementary Athletic Association tournament championship Tuesday with a 27-21 win over Lakeview. The top-seeded Warrior ended the season 21-3 overall and 16-2 in the SDEAA. Old Quarry won the regular-season, big school title via multiple tiebreakers over Jefferson of Woodridge and Lakeview of Downers Grove. Ali Kramer and Paige Terrazas each had nine points in the title game. Kramer, Terrazas and Michelle Jerantowski combined to pull down 30 rebounds and were named to the conference’s all-star team. An unsubstantiated bomb threat written on a bathroom wall prompted a 30-minute soft lockdown at Old Quarry Middle School on Tuesday. Old Quarry Principal Bill Caron said school and law enforcement officials have determined there is no credible threat, despite a message that indicated the school would be bombed on Wednesday, March 13. To ensure student safety, school officials implemented a soft lockdown in which students were required to stay in their classrooms while hallways and bathrooms were searched. At dismissal time, students were instructed to leave their backpacks outside of their lockers, Caron said. Guests at the Mardi Gras Mask-er-Aid this weekend will be treated to a very special art auction. Students at Oakwood, River Valley and Old Quarry Middle School decorated masks in support of the SD113A Educational Foundation fundraiser to take place Saturday, Feb. 9, at Ruffled Feathers Golf Club. “The kids were so excited to complete an art project to show off for the community,” said third-grade teacher Nicole Dyche. “Knowing their art was going to be ‘for sale’ gave them a greater sense of pride in their work. Police investigation revealed rumor was based on a Facebook posting from a student in Pennsylvania. Police will continue to be present at the school Friday.
Administrators at Old Quarry Middle School received what Superintendent Susan Birkenmaier characterized as a “non-credible rumor” about guns being brought to the school on Friday. Thursday night, William Caron, principal at Old Quarry, sent home a letter to parents and guardians of students, stating two students had reported to the school office that they had heard a rumor about some students possibly bringing guns to school on Friday, Dec. 21. “The Lemont Police Department contacted the students who started this rumor and found that it was based on a Facebook posting from a student in Pennsylvania regarding her middle school,” the letter states. “Based on the information we provided and the information the police obtained from our …

School was placed under “soft lockdown” while police and school officials investigated an alleged bomb threat texted to an Old Quarry student’s phone. Police determined the text was sent to the wrong number and referred to an incident in DuPage County.
Old Quarry Middle School was under a “soft lockdown” Thursday morning in cooperation with the Lemont Police Department, after the school received information that a student received a text on her phone Wednesday, stating there was a bomb threat at her school. The student did not receive the text until after school because her phone was at home. After interviewing the student and parent, police and school officials determined the text was the result of a wrong number from a parent in DuPage County near Medina. Police confirmed reports of bomb threats at schools in the Medina area and in Cook County yesterday, and that there is a person being questioned about those incidents.
