Students in St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School’s National Junior Honor Society will be collecting non-perishable food items as part of a nationwide “Souperbowl of Caring” effort, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12 and 13, and Saturday, Jan. 26, at Jewel-Osco, 1202 State St., and Chipain’s Fresh Market, 1100 State St. Donations will benefit Lemont Food Pantries. The Souperbowl of Caring helps young people across the country develop a stronger connection to their communities by caring for their neighbors in need. And, by donating food, community members can join the movement that is transforming the weekend of the Super Bowl into the nation’s largest youth-led weekend of giving and serving. Old Quarry’s National Junior Honor Society, following its annual tradition, recently inducted 35 seventh-graders into its upcoming 2012-2013 chapter and 10 eighth-graders into the remainder of its current 2011-2012 chapter. Across the globe, one in seven people go to bed hungry every night — a scenario difficult to imagine for most Lemont residents. On Friday, however, students at St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School learned firsthand the inequalities associated with food distribution worldwide. The school's National Junior Honor Society, composed of 22 seventh-and eighth-grade students, hosted a Hunger Banquet developed by Oxfam America, an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger and injustice. The Hunger Banquet is the signature event of Oxfam, and is designed to bring attention to poverty and hunger issues through first-hand experience and stories from around the world. On Thursday, Nov. 10, 54 symbolic flames lit up the gratified smiles of newly-inducted National Junior Honor Society members at Old Quarry Middle School. The weather has been cooling down, but National Junior Honor Society takes no breaks. The organization, led by President Ace Matthews, continues to set a positive example through its words, actions and supportive volunteerism.
