Lemont Residents Hope to Take Village’s Sports Complex Project Off the 'Fast Track'

Citizens’ Group says it has gathered 600 signatures on petitions to place the village’s sports complex on the ballot in March 2014.

  Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves Jan. 28 unveiled a proposal to build a $21 million indoor/outdoor sports complex in the village’s downtown area. At the meeting, Reaves said he hoped to put the project on a “fast track” and begin construction of the project in March of this year. But some Lemont residents are saying, “Not so fast.” A group of citizens calling itself the “Let Us Vote” campaign, has been circulating petitions around town, gathering signatures to place a measure on the March 18, 2014 general primary election ballot - allowing Lemont citizens and taxpayers to “have a voice and a vote.” “I’ve been to the [Metra] train station every morning, gathering signatures on petitions,” said Jim Ladas, a 25-year resident of Lemont and one of …

Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves and the Lemont Area Chamber of Commerce will present the 10th annual State of the Village address on Wednesday, March 6, at Crystal Grand Banquets at 12416 Archer Ave. During the event, guests will have the opportunity to hear Reaves present the current state and future direction of Lemont – which will undoubtedly include strategic planning, economic development, transportation updates, the village’s proposed sports complex and more. Registration for the State of the Village address and luncheon will begin at 11 a.m., followed by lunch at noon. Village addresses residents’ concerns and questions about the $21 million project proposed for downtown Lemont.

The Village of Lemont released the following statement Friday in regard to the proposed $21 million indoor/outdoor sports facility that was unveiled by Mayor Brian Reaves at the Jan. 28 Village Board meeting. The village’s statement follows, in its entirety: The following list of questions and answers regarding the announcement of the Lemont Sports Complex was created to address residents concerns and questions about the project. In addition, we will hold an informational meeting on Wednesday, February 6th, at 8:00 a.m. at the Lemont Police Department. Residents Seek Answers on Sports Complex Proposal

Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves unveiled $21 million project at village board meeting Monday night.

At the Jan. 28 Lemont Village Board meeting, Mayor Brian Reaves walked over to a pair of display easels and turned over two large posters that had been resting there since the meeting began. “Today, at this board meeting, we will take action on economic development,” Reaves said, as he unveiled renderings of a $21 million indoor/outdoor sports facility proposed for Lemont’s downtown area. Reaves projected the Lemont Sports Complex would bring 650,000 visitors to Lemont each year – attracting paying traveling teams and spectators from miles around. Sounds about right. That's why some politicians aspire to that kind of work. They get a blank checkbook funded by unlimited taxpayer money. They get to spend it anyway they like. They get to set up mutually beneficial relationships with service providers. They don't even need to ask taxpayers or have a referendum to spend $21 million on a project we really don't need.
