Allison Zych, 10, was sidelined for months last winter after hitting her head twice within two days — once while sledding and another during swim practice. Last month, she posted eight state-qualifying times in her age group.
A year ago, Allison Zych couldn't stay in a pool for more than 10 minutes at a time. In fact, her frequent blinding headaches made it difficult to even stay in school. It started with a seemingly minor sledding injury on New Year's Eve, 2010. Zych, then 9, hit a bump as she went down a hill, causing her to fall back and hit her head on the icy snow. "She came in complaining of a headache and was tired, but I had no idea what happened or how bad she hit her head," said Joan Zych, Allison's mother. A couple of days later, Allison was at swim practice with the Romeoville-based Academy Bullets when she started to become dizzy during her drills. As she swam backward toward the end of the pool, she lost sight of the wall and hit her head. "At …

Patch joins Lemont businesses in supporting the Indians as they compete in the IHSA Class 6A state semifinal Saturday.
One of the drawbacks to running a Patch site is the lack of a permanent business address. Don't get me wrong — I love working out in the community and seeing different people every day. It's the best part of my job. But earlier this week, the Lemont Area Chamber of Commerce sent out an email encouraging local businesses to support the undefeated Lemont High School football team, which is playing in the IHSA state semifinals Saturday in Peoria. Businesses were asked to change their marquees or window displays to include a "good luck" message to the team. Only problem: I don't have a window in Lemont. Or a marquee, last I checked. But Patch is a member of the chamber, and I like to participate in community events when I have the chance. So …

The frequent-flier miles were burning a hole in my pocket. For months, my family and I debated the merits of visiting different cities and attractions. Florida was too hot in the summer. Southwest doesn’t fly to Montana. We’d already been to Disneyland. The East Coast was unexplored territory for my clan, so we decided on Boston. Take in a Red Sox game, go boating on the Charles River, feast on fresh seafood. I would check my Eco-Mom badge at the door, forget about my carbon footprint, and enjoy a weekend away with the family. I secretly relished forgetting environmental responsibility — along with many of my other modern-mom responsibilities — for a while. On previous trips, I delighted in those extra-long showers, disposable plates and …

Outfielder Alexis Valone, will play softball in 2013 for Bowling Green State University, which is located in Bowling Green, OH. Jay has made quite a name for himself since joining head coach Joe Rodeghero's squad his sophomore year. In two varsity seasons, he has posted a 9-3 record with two saves over 74.2 innings, racking up 102 strikeouts — more than 9.5 per seven innings…

The foundation's annual fundraiser, held Oct. 29 at the Narnia Estate, raises money to support educational opportunities for Lemont High School students.
The Lemont High School Educational Foundation's premier fundraising event, "Food for Thought," brought in nearly $39,000 in revenue, school officials said. The organization's fifth annual "Food for Thought" was held Saturday at the Narnia Estate, 16501 135th St. The event was attended by about 200 people, who dined on cuisine from more than a dozen local businesses and participated in raffles and a silent auction. For the first time, "Food for Thought" featured live music courtesy of local band "Crazy Uncles." Food and decor matched the event's theme, "Spooktacular." "Overall, I think the event was terrific," said Julio Padilla, president of the Lemont High School Educational Foundation. "We asked for feedback from the people who attended…

Martellen's Dress & Bridal Boutique, 220 Main St., has opened up in the former home of All About the Dress.
These days, Lemont businesswoman Mary Ellen Troc is swapping her computer and file folders for tulle and satin. A legal assistant working in Chicago for the past 30 years, when Troc’s company was undergoing a transition, she decided she also needed a change. “I decided I wanted to do something else instead of sitting behind a desk typing something,” she said. Recently she opened up Martellen's Dress & Bridal Boutique, 220 Main St., in the former home of All About the Dress. “I’ve always loved retail and fashion,” Troc said. “I think I have a good eye for it. And I love to dress people up.” Her husband, Marty, is helping with the company’s books. The duo, who have been married just over a year, have six kids between them. “They’re all right…
