Editor’s note: Rep. Daniel Lipinski's office today shared this letter to the editor in an email to Lemont Patch. Lipinski prefaced the letter with the following statement: “In today’s Chicago Tribune, my colleague Rep. Robert Dold (IL-10) and I weigh in with a plan to avert the fiscal cliff, reduce our debt and get the country on the path to fiscal sustainability. Together we have been working with a bipartisan group of representatives on a ‘grand bargain’ to place a down payment on our debt before year's end, while putting a framework in place for larger reforms in early 2013 that would reduce the deficit by $4 trillion. We need to compromise and end the brinkmanship in Washington.” The letter follows: Americans are rightfully concerned …

Cook County Board of Commissioners approved a $1 per pack tax increase.

Monday, November 5, 2012
The American Lung Association in Greater Chicago applauds the passage of the $1/pack cigarette tax increase introduced by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. This increase raises the total taxes collected on cigarettes in Cook County to $3 per pack, in additional to the city, state and federal cigarette taxes. Increasing the tobacco tax will result in important public health benefits and substantial savings in healthcare costs in Cook County. Raising the cigarette tax is the most effective way to reduce youth smoking and encourage adults to quit smoking. Each time a cigarette tax increase is implemented, the Illinois Tobacco Quitline sees a sizable increase in calls from smokers wanting to quit. Quitting smoking greatly reduces …

Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno (R-Lemont) says Madigan’s plan should “scare the daylights out of suburban property taxpayers.”

Tuesday, October 30, 2012
Dear editor, Speaker Madigan’s continued push for shifting the costs of teachers’ pensions onto local schools should scare the daylights out of suburban property taxpayers. Under the guise of “pension reform,” Madigan and Governor Quinn will shift hundreds of millions in pension costs to local schools -- forcing massive cuts or property tax increases onto suburban and downstate homeowners. It makes sense for schools to have “skin in the game,” but pension benefits are set by the Illinois General Assembly. To allow politicians in Springfield to set the benefits – but send the bill to suburban property taxpayers is a recipe for disaster. Illinois desperately needs public employee pension reform. But we cannot allow decades of mismanagement …

When the community comes together, wonderful things happen. Last week, the Oakwood and River Valley Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) held its biggest fundraiser of the year, the FUN RUN, a kid style walk-a-thon / run-a-thon. Our goal was to raise $25,000 to be used for technology tools and playground equipment benefiting Oakwood and River Valley children and staff. Several businesses in the Lemont community were instrumental in making the fundraiser a success. As President of the Oakwood and River Valley PTO, I would like to personally thank our sponsors for their generosity and help in making the event so much fun for the children and staff. We are fortunate to have businesses like the above in Lemont supporting our educational …
