Lemont's Bethany Lutheran Church is collecting items for the local VFW to send to U.S. troops, most of whom are currently stationed in Afghanistan.
Lifelong Lemont resident Virginia “Ginny” Connelly put out a call to fellow members of Bethany Lutheran Church after learning the local VFW typically experiences a shortage of items this time of year for their monthly troop care packages. The church is encouraging members of the community to get involved, too, by donating some of the troops’ favorite items – which come in handy when they are far from home. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5819 invites Lemont-area residents to attend a ceremony Sunday to commemorate Veterans Day. The VFW will honor the nation's military men and women beginning at 11 a.m. at the Lemont War Memorial in the 200 block of Main Street. Local businesses are also participating in "Values for Veterans," a program offering dining and shopping discounts as a tribute to local veterans and those currently enlisted in the military. Drop off donations at the Lemont Public Library through Nov. 11.
For the fifth year, the Lemont Public Library is partnering with Lemont VFW Post 5819 and the Rotary Club of Lemont-Homer Glen to collect office supplies, paper products, linens, gift cards, cleaning supplies and more for the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans in Wheaton and the Hines V.A. Hospital Fisher House in North Riverside. For each item donated, donors will receive a coupon good for a free DVD rental or $1 off library fines, up to a maximum of $10 per account. Local veterans were joined by Congressman Dan Lipinski, Mayor Brian Reaves and Lemont police officers Monday as they paid tribute to fallen soldiers.
Several dozen Lemont residents joined the Veterans of Foreign War Post 5819 at the Main Street War Memorial on Monday for the village's annual Memorial Day service. The ceremony was attended by Congressman Dan Lipinski (D-3), Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves, members of the Lemont Police Department and several local veterans. Prior to the service on Main Street, a group from the Lemont VFW visited each of the village's cemetaries, performing a 21-gun salute in honor of the military men and women who have sacrificed their lives to keep the country safe. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Like what you see? The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5819 will visit local cemeteries and hold a brief ceremony Monday morning to honor military men and women.
Lemont residents are invited to attend a cemetary tour and brief ceremony Monday morning to commemorate Memorial Day with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5819. The VFW will honor the nation's military men and women beginning at 8:30 a.m. with visits to local cemeteries. The bus will leave from the post, 15780 New Ave. Cemeteries to be visited include St. Alphonsus, St. Patrick and St. Matthew, among others. The tour will conclude with a wreath-laying ceremony and 21-gun salute around 10:30 a.m. or 11 a.m. at the Lemont War Memorial in the 200 block of Main Street. A fundraiser for the Wounded Warriors Project will be held Saturday night at the Lemont Veterans of Foreign War Post 5819. Doug Wright, former president of the Lemont Lions, organized the event to bring awareness to the soldiers returning home from the Middle East. "I know plenty of people who have served and my son has a lot of friends who have been to Afghanistan and Iraq," Wright said. "I think there needs to be an awareness of how blessed we are that we have everything we have and that's we're able to do everything we want to do. It's because of these soldiers and their bravery." Lemont police and firefighters joined the VFW Honor 22 Post 5819 as they honored our nation's veterans Friday morning.
A crowd of about two dozen gathered at the downtown World War II memorial Friday for Lemont's annual Veterans Day commemoration. The ceremony was led by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5819 and the Ladies Axiliary. They were joined by several members of the Lemont Police Department and the Lemont Fire Protection District. The event included speaches from VFW Post Commander Bill Ward, Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy, Fire Chief Carl Churulo and Lemont Emergency Mangagement Agency Director Tom Ballard.

The group mails 20 to 25 boxes overseas each month.
Earlier this summer, 24 boxes of snacks and toiletries were sent to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan by the Ladies Auxiliary of Lemont Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5819. Diane Krisciunas, president of the group, said 20 to 25 boxes are mailed each month. The soldiers, including two females, are from Lemont or have family members who live in Lemont. “We try to keep it local,” Krisciunas said. The VFW post pays for postage, nearly $12 each for a large box. Soldiers have come back or written letters to say how grateful they are, Krisciunas said. “We don’t know how much it means to them.
