The Forest Preserve District of Will County will host an open house in Lemont on Tuesday to discuss the Veterans Memorial Trail. The meeting will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Lemont Township Community Center, 16300 Alba St. The proposed Veterans Memorial Trail has two components; the East-West component will run along 135th Street in southern Cook and northern Will counties and will connect the Centennial Trail to the project’s North-South component within the right-of-way of I-355. The North-South component will run from 127th Street in Lemont to Route 6 in New Lenox. At the meetings, the public can view and discuss the trail’s alignment with Forest Preserve District staff. Dark skies, rain, wind and hail didn’t appear to dampen shoppers’ spirits Saturday at the township’s annual market to benefit Lemont families in need.
Mother Nature may have brought dark skies, rain, wind and hail to Lemont Saturday – but shoppers appeared unfazed as they browsed the products from more than 30 vendors and crafters at the Neighbor the Neighbor Vendor and Crafters’ Market at the Lemont Township Community Center. Organizer Terri O’Neill-Borders started the market so stay-at-home moms and other crafters and vendors who were trying to supplement their incomes could gather in one place, make more contacts and have a chance to sell some of their wares. Fall is in the air – so it’s the perfect time for Lemont Township’s Oktoberfest, planned for noon to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Lemont Township Community Center at 16300 Alba Street. This is the second year for the family-friendly event, where fest-goers can purchase tasty food and refreshing drinks from Three Corners Grill & Tap, and buy a pumpkin to take home from Puckerville Farms. And, new this year – residents can get into the spirit of Oktoberfest by entering their own home-baked treats in the fall homemade dessert competition. A charity art auction will be held in Lemont next month to benefit a massive, two-day philanthropic project for starving children. For the second year in a row, Feed My Starving Children—a Christian organization dedicated to ending childhood hunger throughout the world—will bring a MobilePack event to Lemont in hopes of making 218,000 meals. The event will run Oct. 12-13 at First Church of the Nazarene, 12725 Bell Road. More than 125 Lemont Girl Scouts packed the Lemont Township Community Center on Monday to celebrate the 100th birthday of Girl Scouts of the United States of America. Troop 931 Leader Jodi Stood said nine fifth-graders from Old Quarry Middle School took on much of the responsibility for planning the event. The program began with a flag ceremony and opening statements from the girls, and continued with outdoor and indoor games, sing-alongs and a 100-year craft. The girls also heard from guest speakers Maureen Orlando and Geri Pocilujko, past volunteers with the Lemont service unit, and Laura Petruzzelli, a 100-year-old great-grandmother of a Lemont Girl Scout.
