'iGrowLemont' Breaks Ground on Community Garden, Plans Planting Day

The group will begin planting vegetables at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 19, at the Lemont Township Community Center. All produce will be donated to local food pantries.

A Lemont group is preparing to plant dozens of crops that will soon benefit local food pantries. "iGrowLemont," a new initiative to promote community and healthy living, broke ground May 11 on a community garden. The garden, located on Alba Street near the Lemont Township Community Center, will be used to stock the Lemont food pantries with fresh produce, supply vegetables for free cooking demonstrations and will also be sold to raise money for the Lemont General Assistance Fund. The groundbreaking was attended by more than a dozen volunteers, Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves, and trustees from the village and Lemont Township, which donated the land. 'iGrowLemont' Initiative Aims to Cultivate Community, Healthy Living

The group's founders are hoping to bring residents together this spring to build a community garden for the Lemont food pantries.

What started as a small idea among friends has grown into a grassroots effort to bring Lemont residents together and promote healthy living. Several volunteers will gather in downtown Lemont on Saturday for the kickoff of a new community initiative, "iGrowLemont." The group was founded earlier this year with the mission of cultivating community by providing opportunities and resources that will enhance the well-being of Lemont residents. This spring, volunteers will build a community garden on Alba Street, near the Lemont Township Community Center. Lemont Junior Woman’s Club Offers Scholarships

Local organization offers funds to Lemont students who demonstrate dedication to community service.

Lemont residents who demonstrate a dedication to community service could earn $1,000 in scholarship funds from the Lemont Junior Woman’s Club. The organization will award three scholarships in May to applicants who have made outstanding contributions to the community through volunteerism. Qualified applicants include residents of Lemont who are either high school seniors (men or women) or adult women returning to school. The LJWC’s review committee is seeking applicants with a history of community service, a demonstrated commitment to volunteerism and strong academic performance.
