Kids love to snuggle up in a cozy pair of PJs when they turn in for the night or when they’re lounging in front of the TV, watching cartoons on a Saturday morning. But when members of Lemont Girl Scout Troop 70327 realized some kids don’t have even one pair of pajamas, they were determined to do something about it. To achieve their goal and to earn their bronze award, the highest award a Girl Scout Junior can achieve, troop members are conducting a pajama drive. “The girls picked a project that they care about and that will make a difference in the world,” said troop leader Paulette Vogel. “They picked a pajama drive [because] there are thousands of kids in this world who do not own a pair of pajamas.” To make a donation, drop off new …

Lemont Public Library will hold its annual Veterans Day commemoration at 7 p.m. Thursday in the library meeting room. Join library staff and "Learn to Say Thanks" to the veterans of World World II. Featured speaker will be Dennis Gagnon, a volunteer with Honor Flight Chicago, whose mission is to recognize and thank WWII veterans by bringing them to Washington, D.C. for a day of honor. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet several veterans of World War II, including Edwin Ognowski who served on the USS Missouri during the Attack on Pearl Harbor. Lemont Girl Scout Troop 259, third-grade brownies from River Valley School, collected more than 900 pairs of mittens from generous members of the community last year – and hoped to top that total in socks this year. The girls not only met their goal of 900 - they ended up with 1,482 pairs of socks for Lemont families in need. “I am truly blown away by all the hard work these girls put into it,” said troop leader Robyn Horn. “They stood outside in the cold at Walgreens for hours soliciting our community. They had drop boxes in town, and then added more on their own. They asked for donations from family and friends, even asking for donations instead of Halloween candy from their grandparents. Arlington Heights had the highest early voter turnout in suburban Cook County, with 6,059 people hitting the polls during the first week of early voting, Oct. 22-28. Lemont residents can vote early through Nov. 3 at the local library.
A total of 1,478 Lemont voters cast their ballots in the Nov. 6 Presidential election in the first week of early voting Oct. 22-28 at the Lemont Public Library. Arlington Heights had the highest turnout in suburban Cook County during the first week of early voting, with 6,059 people casting their ballots. Orland Township came in second with 5,822. Across all Cook County suburbs, 97,129 people voted early through Oct. 28 "If voters keep turning out in such large numbers, we may reach the Early Voting record set in 2008," said Cook County Clerk David Orr. For the fifth year, the Lemont Public Library is partnering with Lemont VFW Post 5819 and the Rotary Club of Lemont-Homer Glen to collect office supplies, paper products, linens, gift cards, cleaning supplies and more for the Midwest Shelter for Homeless Veterans in Wheaton and the Hines V.A. Hospital Fisher House in North Riverside. For each item donated, donors will receive a coupon good for a free DVD rental or $1 off library fines, up to a maximum of $10 per account. Author and Rolling Stones insider Bill German will discuss his ups and downs with "the world's greatest rock 'n' roll band" at a free presentation at the Lemont Public Library at 7 p.m. Wednesday. German’s book, Under Their Thumb, chronicles how he befriended the Stones while he was just a teenager and was hired as the group's official historian for the next two decades. He traveled the world with Mick, Keith and the boys - stayed at their homes, and witnessed their private jam sessions, decadent parties and vicious in-fights.
