Registration is under way for “Campus Fighting Chance” April 24 at the Lemont Police Department.
If you are heading off to college next fall, you have probably visited the campus and are honing in on the classes you plan to take. You may have checked out the dorms and are dreaming about how you will decorate your space, wondering what will your roommate be like – and thinking about how much you will enjoy your new-found freedom. But have you thought about how to stay safe on campus? To help you further prepare for college, the Lemont Junior Woman’s Club is sponsoring “Campus Fighting Chance,” a crash-course on street smarts for students who will be living independently for the first time. Taught by representatives of the Lemont Police Department, Illinois State Police, Guardian Angel Community Services and the Illinois Emergency Room …

Children don’t come with instructions. That's why the Lemont Junior Woman’s Club offers the Safe Sitter course for aspiring babysitters ages 11-13. Registration is now under way for a class to be held Saturdays, March 9 and 16, at Lemont Safety Village, 55 Stephen St. The class runs from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. A $60 fee includes all course materials, lunch and snacks. The practical class teaches everything from how to help a choking infant to personal safety for the sitter. Not-for-profit organization, providing cultural, educational, civic and philanthropic services to Lemont and its residents.
The Lemont Junior Woman’s Club is kicking off the new year – and newly elected club president Jill McAndrews is acknowledging and honoring the club’s history while looking toward the future through the theme, “Grounded, Growing, Giving.” Established in 1993 by 50 charter members, the LJWC began by dedicating itself to establishing a permanent site for its Safety Village programs. Today, the building at 55 Stephen St. hosts a variety of local groups, including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, sports clubs and more. In 1998, the club began sponsoring the Lemont Juniorettes, a service group for young women ages 12 through 18. The group reflects the service and community-centered values of the LJWC and teaches the importance of citizenship and …

A caravan of minivans and sport utility vehicles packed with laundry baskets arrived at the Lemont Township offices Friday morning. The 106 baskets were filled with cleaning supplies, toiletries and other basic necessities - to be distributed to struggling Lemont families on Saturday. While the two local food pantries provide some relief for those families, there is an ongoing need for some basic items that they cannot meet. “It is inspiring to see our club members come together year after year to make this happen,” said project organizer Barb Williams. The project has become a true community effort. While Lemont Junior Woman’s Club members provide the bulk of the donations, local Girl Scout troops and businesses also lend support. As the …
