Students in first grade through eighth grade can register for a variety of summer sports camps through May 31.
Registration now is open for the Lemont High School Summer Sports Academy, which provides enrichment opportunities in a variety of sports for students of all ages. Some of the camps are geared toward students who will be enrolled at Lemont High School in Fall 2013, but others are for students who will be in kindergarten through eighth grade. The spring musical will run Thursday through Saturday at the Lemont High School Performing Arts Center.
Children of all ages can expect grand, high-flying adventures as they join Peter, Wendy, John, Michael and Tinkerbell on a trip to Neverland, a timeless place where one never can grow old. Lemont High School’s Performing Arts Center will feature "Peter Pan" for nightly performances from Thursday, May 16, through Saturday, May 18. Lemont needed a victory to take the crown; a loss would have meant a three-way tie with Oak Forest and Tinley Park. After sharing the title with Oak Forest last year and repeatedly finishing second in years past, the Indians finally came out on top with a 1-0 win Thursday—ending the Bengals' eight-year reign as conference champions. Lemont High School students earned two top-ten finishes at the 2013 Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) State Finals on May 4.
The Lemont High School Mathletes squad competed at the 2013 Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) State Finals on the campus of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign on May 4, and finished 11th in Division 3AA. Lemont, which saw its students earn two top-ten finishes at the event, now has finished among the state’s top 20 in its division five of the last six years. The team placed among the top 20 in all 12 of the competition’s events, which helped it become the recipient of the Richard Rhoad Award as its division’s most improved team. For five years, Lemont High School has sent an entry to compete in one of the nation’s top architectural design contests, and while its students came back with an award from each of the first four trips, the top state-and national-level awards have been elusive. That changed in year five, as its entry - “5s Designs” - captured six awards, including first place in the National High School Skyscraper Challenge division, at the 2013 Mock Firms Architectural Competition, which was contested at Chicago’s Congress Plaza Hotel on April 25-26. The event was sponsored by Chicago Architecture Today. The Lemont High School art community debuted a new public art show at the Lemont Center for the Arts on Thursday that will run through June 30, titled “Eclectic: LHS Student Art Show” and featuring “the best of the best” of student artwork. According to a Lemont High press release, “The show, which will feature a variety of outstanding pieces representing a variety of media, is expected to become an annual showcase for the Lemont community’s young aspiring artists.” The show is open to the public at the Lemont Center for the Arts (1243 State Street, Lemont) from noon-4 p.m. on Fridays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturdays, and noon-4 p.m. on Sundays. The Texans' new backup center said his disappointment at not being picked quickly turned to excitement when he was immediately signed as a free agent.
Newly-signed Houston Texans center/offensive lineman Graham Pocic, a graduate of Lemont High School and the University of Illinois, said watching the NFL draft was "nerve-wracking," and that his disappointment at not being selected quickly turned to excitement when he signed with the Texans shortly afterwards, in an interview with the Suburban Life. "Probably the biggest thing when you are undrafted," he told the paper, "is looking for the best opportunity to go in and make the team, make the 53-man roster. Shackel will take over the reins from longtime board member Beverly Marzec, who became the board's first-ever female president in 2009.
The Lemont High School District 210 Board of Education elected Mike Shackel as its new president Tuesday night. Shackel, who was re-elected to the board last month, replaces the district's first-ever female president, Beverly Marzec, who has held the position since 2009. During the organizational meeting, Shackel and board members Mike Kardas and George Rimbo were sworn in for four-year terms that end in 2017. All three are beginning their second terms. Kardas, Rimbo and Shackel will continue to serve on the seven-member school board with Marzec, Pam Driscoll, Mark McMahon and Mary Tally, who were not up for reelection in 2013. The Lemont High School bass-fishing team duo of junior Jake Lepczynski and sophomore Jack Lambert won the IHSA Des Plaines Conservation Area Sectional at Braidwood Lake on Friday, earning a berth in the 2013 IHSA Bass Fishing State Finals. With coach Dave LaBarbera driving the boat and junior Vince Sciacca as alternate, Lepczynski and Lambert caught three fish weighing 7.17 bounds, beating out teams from Hinsdale Central (two fish, 5.98 pounds) and York (three fish, 5.85 pounds.) The sectional competition was one of several that was forced by the recent heavy rain and flooding to change location, and the state finals, originally set for the upcoming weekend, have also been postponed.
