Lemont Girl Scouts Celebrate 100th Anniversary

More than 125 girls commemorated the event with crafts, games, guest speakers and an indoor Promise Circle at the Lemont Township Community Center.

More than 125 Lemont Girl Scouts packed the Lemont Township Community Center on Monday to celebrate the 100th birthday of Girl Scouts of the United States of America. Troop 931 Leader Jodi Stood said nine fifth-graders from Old Quarry Middle School took on much of the responsibility for planning the event.  The program began with a flag ceremony and opening statements from the girls, and continued with outdoor and indoor games, sing-alongs and a 100-year craft. The girls also heard from guest speakers Maureen Orlando and Geri Pocilujko, past volunteers with the Lemont service unit, and Laura Petruzzelli, a 100-year-old great-grandmother of a Lemont Girl Scout. At 7:12 p.m. (19:12 in military time), the Lemont Girl Scouts joined an …

Lemont Girl Scouts Still Collecting Winter Gear for Charity

Troop 259's mitten drive will end Wednesday, Nov. 30.

A local Girl Scout troop is making its final push this week to collect winter apparel for children in need. Lemont Girl Scout Troop 259, which is made up of local second-graders, has been holding a mitten drive for the past month at various locations around town. The girls are asking for new mittens, gloves, scarves and hats — all of which will be donated for Lemont families in need and the My Joyful Heart organization in Mokena. Troop Leader Robyn Horn says of the girls, "They are a driven group of second-graders that are always willing to help out people in need ... They're really trying hard to make their community a better place!" The final day to drop off items is Wednesday, Nov. 30. Donations can be dropped off at any of the …

Troop 70144, which is made up of third-grade through fifth-grade girls, collected new and used books for Oakwood and River Valley schools throughout the month of June.

Earlier this summer, Lemont Girl Scout Troop 70144 hoped to make a sizable contribution to classroom libraries in Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A by holding a community book drive. When organizers announced the event, they said they hoped to collect about 300 books for Oakwood and River Valley schools (kindergarten through fifth grade) by July 1. By the end of the drive, however, the troop had far exceeded expectations—collecting more than 3,300 new and used books.
