Death of LHS Volleyball Coach Motivates Mom to Make a Difference

Kathy Brockett is committed to improving safety conditions along Route 53 in Joliet, where her son Mark was struck by two cars last year.

In the early morning hours of Aug. 23, 2009, Kathy Brockett's life was changed in an instant. Her 25-year-old son, Mark Brockett, the varsity boys volleyball coach at Lemont High School, was walking near a railroad viaduct on Route 53 in Joliet when he was struck and killed by two vehicles. Both drivers claimed poor lighting contributed to the accident. In the year since Mark's death, Kathy Brockett has dedicated much of her time to studying the safety conditions along Route 53. She began meeting with Joliet Township and city officials in Sept. 2009 to discuss ways to make the area safer for drivers and pedestrians.
