Route 171 Closure Causes 3-Month Detour through Lemont

A culvert replacement project will require closing State Street between 7th and 8th streets in Lockport beginning July 5. Traffic will be re-routed to Illinois and Main streets in Lemont.

A culvert replacement project in Lockport will require closing a portion of Route 171 (State Street) for three months beginning July 5, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced Tuesday. The street will be closed to through traffic between 7th and 8th streets. Access to residences, businesses and side streets north and south of Milne Creek will be maintained. Detour routes will be posted. Southbound Route 171 traffic will be detoured west on Main and Illinois streets in Lemont, south on New Avenue, west on 135th Street, south on Illinois 53 and east on Illinois 7 to reconnect with Route 171. Water Main Work Closes Illinois Street Ramp Early

The ramp from New Avenue to Lemont Road was originally scheduled to close Sept. 19.

The ramp from Lemont Road to New Avenue near downtown Lemont was shut down early this week, just days before it was scheduled to be closed for pavement patching. Lemont Public Works Director Ralph Pukula said workers were forced to close the Illinois Street ramp due to "unforseen issues" with a New Avenue water main project. The Illinois Street ramp was originally expected to be closed Sept. 19-26 for manhole repairs at the intersection of Illinois and State streets, according to a news release from the Illinois Department of Transportation. IDOT Announces Lemont Road Ramp Closure

The Illinois Street ramp from Lemont Road to New Avenue will be closed for one week beginning Monday, Sept. 19.

Beginning next week, the ramp from Lemont Road to New Avenue near downtown Lemont will be closed for pavement patching, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced. The Illinois Street ramp is expected to be closed Sept. 19-26 for manhole repairs at the intersection of Illinois and State streets, according to an IDOT press release. During construction, all southbound Lemont Road traffic will be detoured south on State Street through Lemont to reach New Avenue via Illinois 171. Northbound New Avenue traffic will be detoured to northbound Illinois 83 and southbound Interstate 55 to reach Lemont Road. The Lemont Public Works Department is again asking drivers to seek alternative routes while workers finish construction.

The Lemont Public Works Department is urging drivers to avoid the intersection of State and Illinois streets Wednesday as workers continue the installation of a new water main. Construction began Monday and was originally expected to be completed Tuesday. Traffic will be affected from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, said Ralph Pukula, director of Lemont Public Works. Though traffic coordinators will be on site to direct vehicles, Pukula said drivers should use alternative routes if possible.

State Street Water Main Construction Begins Monday

The project is expected to be completed by the end of November.

Crews will begin working Monday to replace the old State Street water mains near downtown Lemont. Len Cox and Sons Excavating will work on the project, replacing exisiting parallel 4-inch and 8-inch water mains from Cass Street to Illinois Street with new 12-inch pipes. The cost will be $176,170, which is higher than the original engineer's estimate of $145,717. Drivers should be cautious when passing through the area, as flag personnel will be on site directing traffic, said Rose Yates, executive assistant for the village of Lemont. Approximately 70 percent of the project will be funded by the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, while the village will pay the remaining 30 percent. Don't believe the "completed" date at all. That's what we were told at the beginning of October when they started the mess on Warner. It's been about 3 weeks since any work, other than "bleeding" the pipes, has been done.   more ›
