State to Require New Vaccinations for 6th-12th Graders: What Do You Think?

Do you think the state of Illinois should require students to receive the Tdap booster shot in order to remain in school?

The Illinois State Board of Health has approved new recommendations from the Illinois Department of Public Health and The Illinois Department of Education to require all students in sixth grade through senior year of high school to have an additional vaccination. The students will now need to show proof of receiving the Tdap booster shot. The vaccine immunizes against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. “We’ve seen an increase in pertussis, or whooping cough, in Illinois during the last six years. Medical experts have found whooping cough has been on the rise in pre-teens and teens, indicating a waning immunity from infant and childhood immunizations,” said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck in a press release…

17 in Illinois Sick Following Cantaloupe Salmonella Outbreak

An outbreak of infection from the salmonella bacteria is linked to farms in southwestern Indiana.

Since July 7, more than 140 people have been infected in 20 states from salmonella bacteria linked to cantaloupe from farms in southwestern Indiana, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.  Two deaths have been linked to the infection, according to the Wall Street Journal. Both deaths were in Kentucky.   The Illinois Department of Public Health announced Monday there are 17 cases in Illinois. Eight people have been hospitalized. "Many cantaloupes have the growing area identified with a sticker," the CDC told the Wall Street Journal. "If no sticker is present, consumers should inquire about the source. When in doubt, throw it out." Salmonella infection symptons include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. While most people …

Lemont Mosquitoes Test Positive for West Nile Virus

The mosquitoes with the virus were collected from Lemont and Norridge in Cook County, and Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Lisle, Westmont and Woodridge in DuPage County.

The first batch of mosquitoes of the year have tested positive for West Nile virus, and one was found in Lemont.  Mosquitoes collected Thursday, May 17, from Lemont and Norridge in Cook County, and Clarendon Hills, Hinsdale, Lisle, Westmont and Woodridge in DuPage County tested positive for the virus, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health.  A crow collected by the Chicago Department of Public Health also tested positive for West Nile virus.  “Although it is a little earlier in the season than we normally find West Nile virus positive mosquito pools and birds, it is not unheard of,” said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck. “This is a good reminder as we head into the Memorial Day weekend and …
