For those last-minute shoppers, each of the Illinois Tollway’s four roadways offers access to great shopping: Tollway customers will also find there’s still time to tell Santa Claus what they want for Christmas. On Sunday, December 23, visit and take a photo with Old Saint Nick at the Chicago Southland Lincoln Oasis on the south Tri-State Tollway (I-294/I-80) from 1 to 4 p.m. The Illinois Tollway expects 15.7 million vehicles will use the tollway system during the Christmas and New Year’s holidays between Friday, Dec. 23, and Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2013. Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy has announced his plans for the 2012 holiday “Drive Sober of Get Pulled Over/Click It or Ticket” crackdown. The intensified enforcement effort against drunk drivers and seat belt law violators underscores the disproportionate number of traffic deaths caused by alcohol and failure to buckle up. The stepped-up enforcement began Dec. 17, and will run through New Year’s Eve. NORAD tracks Santa every year, and children can find out where Santa is as he travels the world delivering presents on Christmas Eve.
While Santa Claus makes his trip around the world, with Rudolph lighting the way, the men and women at NORAD will be tracking his travels and alerting children of his progress. Santa's magic is powerful and much more technologically advanced than that of NORAD, the North American Air Defense Command, said U.S. Army Major Mike Humphreys. Humphreys is stationed at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, Colo. The command is confident that Santa will be able to handle anything he encounters on his Christmas Eve trip. The Lemont Spartans Hockey Club recently participated in a Toys for Tots drive, which was sponsored by the Plainfield Hockey Club. Junior varsity and varsity teams from both schools presented toys to members of the U.S. Marine Corps at Canlan Ice Sports Dec. 8. Between games, all four teams came out onto the ice, where each player presented an unwrapped toy as they skated up to the collection table and shook hands with three U.S. Marines.

Did you glance at the calendar today and suddenly realize that Christmas is less than two weeks away? Are you in all-out panic mode over what to pick up for those hard-to-buy-for people on your gift-giving list this year? Ok, maybe that’s just me … but at any rate, I took a stroll down Stephen Street the other day and was amazed by the terrific gift ideas I found at the independent stores in just one block.
