Homes and businesses affected by last month's flooding and winds may qualify for assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Federal assistance may be on the way for local residents and businesses hit by last month’s flooding. Congressman Dan Lipinski announced Monday that constituents of Illinois’s Third District residing in Will, DuPage and Cook counties are now eligible to apply for assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Lipinski was part of an Illinois delegation urging President Obama to back the governor’s request for federal aid following torrential rainstorms and straight-line winds that damaged homes and businesses across the state. Last Friday, the president signed a disaster declaration offering federal aid. The declaration covers those affected by the severe storms and winds between April 16 and May 5. Those applying for federal …

Congressman Dan Lipinski announced April 19 that the district was awarded a $12,500 grant to purchase a new thermal imaging camera and a specialized washing machine.
The Lemont Fire Protection District has received a federal grant to purchase new camera equipment, Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-3) announced Friday. The $12,500 grant, awarded through the Department of Homeland Security, will be used to purchase a new thermal imaging camera so firefighters can better see flames and trapped victims in smoke-filled rooms, Lipinski said in a release. Lipinski said the grant will also allow the fire protection district to purchase a specialized washing machine to clean gear that has been used to respond to fires and incidents involving hazardous material. “Our first responders play a critical role in keeping our communities safe. Providing them with the equipment they need to do their jobs is one of my highest…

Congressman Dan Lipinski said he will explore legislative action to pressure Canadian National Railway to allow Metra to run more trains on its line.
U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (IL-3) said he is exploring legislative options to improve and expand service on Metra's Heritage Corridor Line. Lipinski recently met with officials from Metra and the Surface Transportation Board (STB) to discuss the options available for putting more pressure on Canadian National Railway (CN) to allow Metra to run more trains on the line. Lipinski, the senior member from Illinois on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, also had requested of CN, the Canadian company that owns and manages the Heritage Corridor Line, that CEO Claude Mongeau come to a meeting to discuss improving commuter service. CN said the company had no one available to participate in the meeting with Metra and the STB, according…

Dear friends and supporters, Now that the 2012 General Elections are behind us, and the 2013 inaugurations are upon us, I wanted to thank you for your support throughout our campaign efforts to win Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District seat. Many unexpected voting results came in on the night of November 6th 2012 in so many races in Illinois and around the country. For us, we were running against the 30 year, 2 generation, one of Illinois’ largest powerbroker family names, with no support from the state party or national party. Our race was probably the toughest one to win in Illinois. My opponent received most of his $1,700,000 of campaign funding from union dues money shoveled in from union PACs and lobbyists. We raised just under $13,…

Four Republicans voted against the Senate bill.
With the clock ticking, Congress voted 257-167 to pass a Senate bill to stop the country from going over the so-called "fiscal cliff." On Tuesday, members of the House of Representatives from Illinois voted 14-4 in favor of the bill. For Republican Judy Biggert, who was defeated in November by Bill Foster, her vote in favor of the bill was her last as a member of the House of Representatives. Adam Kinzinger, R-Manteno, joined Biggert in voting yes, along with Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs. Four House Republicans from Illinois voted no: Randy Hultgren (Winfield), Peter Roskam (Wheaton), Bobby Schilling (Colona) and Joe Walsh (McHenry). In the Senate, Dick Durbin, D-Springfield, voted to pass the measure. Mark Kirk, R-Highland Park, did …

Patch contacted 10 newly elected representatives to find out what they plan to do to help curb gun violence in our country in the wake of last week's mass killing in Newtown, CT. Those who actually wanted to discuss the issue say it's time for a change.
When members of the 113th Congress take their seats in January, one of the top items on their agenda very well could be a new look at federal gun control laws. In the wake of the Newtown, CT, tragedy of one week ago today, President Obama on Wednesday set a January deadline for his administration to "create concrete proposals" to curb gun violence in the United States. Obama also called on Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 to "pursue the possibility of limiting high-capacity ammunition clips" and to "close a gun show loophole that allows people to purchase firearms from private dealers without a background check." What will come of this renewed debate is yet to be seen, but what is certain is that …

The new Urban Center for Computation and Data will apply advanced computational and data-driven techniques to the challenge of intelligent urban planning and design.
Argonne National Laboratory, in partnership with the University of Chicago, received a $600,000 federal grant for a new research effort that will help decision-makers in urban areas better understand the impact of different policies on their communities. According to the University of Chicago, the population of the world's cities will nearly double over the next several decades. And there's much more data being collected to help optimize the operation of cities and anticipate the impact of their growth. The $600,000 grant, from the National Science Foundation, will unite reseachers through the Computation Institute (CI), a joint initiative between the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory. The new Urban Center for …
