Callers are telling victims they are from the Internal Revenue Service, the Cook County Sheriff reports.
Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart is warning of a phone scam where callers threaten victims with arrest and/or deportation if they do not pay up. Cook County Sheriff’s Police have received a number of reports from the unincorporated Des Plaines area of unknown callers telling victims they are from the Internal Revenue Service or a collection agency. The callers tell the victims, all of whom are originally from India, that they could be arrested or deported if they do not send the “payments owed.” The callers often speak to the victims in various Indian languages. If you didn’t buy a lotto ticket in the United Kingdom lottery but are getting badgered with emails and phone calls that you’re a winner, contact your local police department immediately. Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart warns residents not to be fooled by recent scams where “winners” are being told they are entitled to a large lottery cash prize without ever having purchased a ticket. During the last six months, an 80-year-old victim lost $90,000 and a 74-year-old victim lost $82,000 in the lottery scam. Both victims are from the south suburbs. Police will set up a checkpoint at Archer Avenue and Route 83 on Friday, July 27.
The Cook County Sheriff's Police will conduct a roadside safety checkpoint Friday night in an effort to curb drunk driving. Police will set up a checkpoint at Archer Avenue and Route 83 in the evening hours Friday, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart annouced Wednesday. During the safety check, vehicles will be stopped randomly based on the flow of traffic, according to a press release. Drivers will be screened for proper licensing and registration, and vehicles will be checked for equipment and other violations. Any suspicious passengers will be subject to questioning by police. After a decision was made to save money by centralizing weekend and holiday bond courts at 26th and California, suburban police forces expressed some concern. For several months, police chiefs worried about the staffing and transportation burden they would bear in transporting inmates to the centralized location for bond court, in Chicago, as opposed to their suburban district courthouse for bond hearings, which had been the practice for many years.
