New York Fire Truck from 9/11 Visits Lemont

The Rescue Remembrance Project made an appearance Wednesday at the Christopher Wheatley Memorial Golf Outing at Cog Hill with "Rescue 5," a FDNY truck that lost 11 firefighters in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Hundreds of miles from New York and 11 years removed from the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center, FDNY Rescue 5 serves as a moving memorial—a tribute to the firefighters who lost their lives when the towers fell. Rescue 5 was one of just a handful of heavy rescue apparatus to respond to the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The Staten Island-based company lost 11 men that day; only one firefighter from the unit survived. The truck was built in 1996, and served as a front-line rescue vehicle until 2005. It went out of service in 2011, at which point it was put up for auction by the city of New York. Back in Illinois, a group of firefighters was ready to step in. The Rescue Remembrance Project was founded last year after a group of firefighters…

Golfers, Sponsors Still Needed for Christopher Wheatley Memorial Golf Outing

The second annual event will be held Wednesday, June 20, at Cog Hill in Lemont. All funds will be used to provide scholarships in the fallen firefighter's memory.

Family and friends of fallen Chicago firefighter Christopher Wheatley are still looking for golfers and sponsors to participate in an upcoming memorial fundraiser. The FF/PM Christopher D. Wheatley Memorial Foundation will hold its second annual golf outing on Wednesday, June 20, at Cog Hill Golf Club, 12294 Archer Ave. The event will feature 18 holes of golf, an informal dinner and a four-hour open bar. All proceeds will be used to fund scholarships in Wheatley's honor. Almost immediately after the 31-year-old Lemont native died battling a West Loop blaze in August 2010, several family members set up a scholarship fund for students at Lemont High School, from which Christopher graduated in 1997. In May 2011, the foundation awarded its …

Cog Hill's Dubsdread Ranks Among America's Toughest Golf Courses

A recent report by Golf Digest ranked the Lemont course No. 22 on its annual list of the 75 toughest courses in the country.

Dubsdread, also known as Course #4 at Cog Hill Golf Club in Lemont, was recently ranked by Golf Digest as one the most difficult courses in America. In the January 2012 issue of the magazine, 75 courses are featured in the annual "America's Toughest Golf Courses" feature. Making its first appearance on the list, Dubsdread ranked No. 22, according to a press release. Cog Hill officials credit the course's rise in the rankings to its $5 million renovation in 2008 by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones. The renovation included upgrades to the strategy, design, integrity and overall character of the course, according to the release. "We are very proud to have Dubsdread selected as one of the toughest courses in America," said Frank …
