Lemont Honored as 'Illinois Arts Friendly Community'

Arts Alliance Illinois recognized the village with the Presidents' Choice Award for its commitment to promoting the arts.

One of the state's foremost art associations has recognized the village of Lemont for its dedication to promoting the arts within the community. Arts Alliance Illinois and the Illinois Municipal League selected Lemont as the Presidents' Choice winner for the Arts Friendly Community Awards, Trustee Ron Stapleton announced Monday. The award is given to two communities each year; Lemont won for towns with populations less than 20,000. The Arts Friendly Community Awards "recognize and celebrate Illinois municipalities and municipal leaders who have gone above and beyond in building more vibrant and livable communities through the arts," according to the Arts Alliance Illinois Web site. VIDEO: Lemont Center for the Arts Celebrates Grand Opening

During the opening celebration Saturday, the Arts and Culture Commission was also presented with a special award from the Arts Alliance of Illinois and the Illinois Municipal League.

Lemont artists now officially have a place to call home. The village's Arts and Culture Commission celebrated Saturday the opening of its new Center for the Arts in the Lemont Village Square Plaza. "We're terribly excited," said commission member Emily JB Christian. "It really came together beautifully, and it's something the whole village can be proud of." The grand opening event featured artwork from several local artists, as well as hands-on activities, raffles and refreshments. "We had so many artists contribute such wonderful work for this opening, and we're so grateful," said Mona Perry, chairperson of the Arts and Culture Commission.
