The National Retail Federation says more shoppers participated in Black Friday weekend than ever.
The holiday shopping season traditionally has started around 6 a.m. on the Friday after Thanksgiving, but by that hour this year, Target employees and those of other stores who braved an early morning shopping rush in Lemont—and across the country— had already seen the end of a long shift. They were catching their breath to prepare for the next group of shoppers. The waves of crowds had gone, leaving dirt-tracked floors and managers with bloodshot eyes and rumpled shirts. This time around, more shoppers purchased and took avantage of deals on the biggest shopping weekend of the year than ever before, according the National Retail Federation. Black Friday shoppers will have to get in line a little earlier this year if they want to take advantage of deals at Target and other area retailers — and it could interrupt their Thanksgiving plans. Target announced Oct. 28 that stores will open at midnight on Friday, Nov. 25, marking the earliest Black Friday opening in the company's history. “The holidays bring hectic schedules and tight budgets, so extending store hours and offering lots of additional ways to save makes Target a great choice for affordable, one-stop holiday shopping,” Target Executive Vice President Tina Schiel stated in a news release last month. However, the decision has created an uproar among some shoppers and Target employees. As of Tuesday, more than 91,000 …
