Send a Little Piece of Home to U.S. Troops Overseas

Lemont's Bethany Lutheran Church is collecting items for the local VFW to send to U.S. troops, most of whom are currently stationed in Afghanistan.

Lifelong Lemont resident Virginia “Ginny” Connelly put out a call to fellow members of Bethany Lutheran Church after learning the local VFW typically experiences a shortage of items this time of year for their monthly troop care packages. The church is encouraging members of the community to get involved, too, by donating some of the troops’ favorite items – which come in handy when they are far from home. Here’s a list of some of the things you can donate: According to Operation Care Packages, other favorite goodies include protein bars, pre-sweetened powdered drinks, Ziplock bags, hot chocolate and hot cider packets, canned fruit, dried fruit, fruit snacks, canned hearty soup, ravioli, stew, Cup-A-Soup, Ramen noodles, trail mix, instant …

Letter Carriers Doing Their Part to Stamp Out Hunger

Food pantries at Lemont United Methodist Church and Bethany Lutheran Church will split all food collected by Lemont postal workers Saturday.

This food drive is an easy one. As easy as putting out the mail. It's even easier, because you don't need a stamp. On Saturday, May 12, Lemont letter carriers will join in the effort to Stamp Out Hunger, a nationwide effort to combat hunger. To participate in the 20th Stamp Out Hunger food drive, residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice or cereal next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 12. All donations will be split between the food pantries at Lemont United Methodist Church, 25 W. Custer St., and Bethany Lutheran Church, 500 Lemont St. May 12 marks the 20th anniversary of the National Association of Letter …
