Citizens File Petitions at Village Hall to Put Sports Complex on the Ballot

Residents hope to slow down mayor’s ‘fast track’ proposal to issue bonds to build a $21 million sports facility in downtown Lemont by letting voters decide the issue.

A group of a dozen or so Lemont residents filed petitions at Village Hall Wednesday morning in an effort to put the village’s proposed $21 million sports complex to a vote March 18, 2014. Janet Hughes, who spearheaded a petition drive along with Hank Olenick, Jim Ladas and more than a dozen others, said the group turned in 185 pages of petitions signed by 1,675 residents. The petitions seek to allow voters to decide whether the village should issue up to $21 million in alternate revenue bonds to finance the sports facility. Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves Jan. 28 unveiled a proposal to build the indoor/outdoor sports complex in the village’s downtown area. Reaves said he hoped to put the project on a “fast track” and begin construction of the …

Lemont Residents Hope to Take Village’s Sports Complex Project Off the 'Fast Track'

Citizens’ Group says it has gathered 600 signatures on petitions to place the village’s sports complex on the ballot in March 2014.

Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves Jan. 28 unveiled a proposal to build a $21 million indoor/outdoor sports complex in the village’s downtown area. At the meeting, Reaves said he hoped to put the project on a “fast track” and begin construction of the project in March of this year. But some Lemont residents are saying, “Not so fast.” A group of citizens calling itself the “Let Us Vote” campaign, has been circulating petitions around town, gathering signatures to place a measure on the March 18, 2014 general primary election ballot - allowing Lemont citizens and taxpayers to “have a voice and a vote.” “I’ve been to the [Metra] train station every morning, gathering signatures on petitions,” said Jim Ladas, a 25-year resident of Lemont and one of …

Hughes Files Write-In Paperwork for District 113A School Board Election

Current Board Member Janet Hughes will run as a write-in candidate in the April 5 consolidated election after being removed from the original ballot for allegedly failing to properly bind her nominating petition.

Janet Hughes, a current school board member in Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A, officially filed paperwork Monday to become a write-in candidate in the April 5 consolidated election. Hughes filed petitions at the DuPage and Cook County courthouses just three days before the Feb. 3 deadline, she told Patch on Monday afternoon. According to the Cook County Clerk's Office, she will not appear on the regular ballot on Election Day, but rather on a separate list of eligible write-in candidates. Though Hughes originally filed her nominating petition in December, she was removed from the ballot during a Jan. 4 hearing of the District 113A Electoral Board. During the hearing, the Electoral Board — composed of School Board President …

District 113A Board Considers April Referendum Options, Possibility of State Takeover

Financial advisers for Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A told the school board Monday that they would run out of money by July without an additional source of revenue.

The Board of Education for Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A began discussing options for an April referendum question Monday night after financial advisers warned they would need additional revenue to meet their financial obligations in July. According to representatives from PMA Financial, the repayment of the $5.5 million in tax anticipation warrants (TAWs) issued to Lemont High School District 210 will cause a negative balance in the District 113A education fund by June 30. Though money may be transferred from the operation and transportation funds, the amount will likely be insufficient to cover July accounts payable, advisers said. District 113A has been using TAWs to pay its bills since depleting its cash reserves in …

Patch at the Polls: Judges Report High Turnout in Final Hours of Election

Several precincts saw nearly half of registered voters with only one hour left in the midterm election.

Also voting on the referendum for District 113A are some residents of DuPage Township. Precincts 41 and 128 had a "very good turnout," with 664 voters as of 5:50 p.m., election judges said. "Precincts 41 and 128 vote for Lemont 113A -- I think that attributed to heavier turnout than expected, judge Lorianne Juskiewicz said. "We've had a lot of activity from the moment we opened. We had a line several times throughout the day." Juskiewicz said the turnout has been impressive, especially considering Tuesday was a midterm election. "Compared to the past midterm elections which were very quiet, we've been very active," she said. Dozens of voters waited in line at Centennial Community Center with a little over an hour left in the election. As …

Patch at the Polls: Senior Voters Out in Force at VFW, LHS

Election officials said voter turnout has been high in Precincts 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 and 11.

There also has been a high turnout of senior voters from Precincts 4 and 5 at Lemont High School, election judges said. Like the precincts voting at VFW Post 5819, Precincts 4 and 5 encompass much of older Lemont, including the downtown's west end and the area around the high school. As of 2:40 p.m., Precinct 4 had 226 voters and Precinct 5 had 230. "Turnout has been great so far," election judge Paul Cimino said. "I wouldn't be surprised if it beat the 2008 presidential election." According to Cimino, the line for voting in Precinct 5 has been steady throughout the day. "I think there are a lot of issues on the ballot that have people concerned — particularly the local issues," he said. Election judges in Lemont Township Precincts …

82nd District Challenger Says Budget Comes Down to Wants and Needs

Candidate Q&A: Matt Mostowik, the Darien man challenging in the 82nd District, says he'll draw a firm line between what the state can cut back on and what it can't do without.

Longtime Darien resident Matt Mostowik entered the race for the 82nd District seat in the Illinois House with an agenda of change. He talks to Patch about his history on the District 61 School Board, improving the state's morale, and the fragile balance between meeting voter's wants and needs. He's challenging incumbent State Rep. Jim Durkin. Darien Patch: What kind of change do you think is in store for Illinois with this election?  Matt Mostowik: I think there are some very difficult decisions that are going to have to be made that previous elected officials have avoided. They've avoided them because they don't want to upset the electorate. They want to keep their job. But how can someone keep their job when they're not doing their job? …
