Smokey Row Antiques Celebrates 10 Years in Downtown Lemont

Local couple Gary and Sue Roy have made a living sharing their love of antiques.

For the past decade, Lemont couple Gary and Sue Roy have turned their passion for antiques into a dream job. Last month, the Roys celebrated the 10th anniversary and grand re-opening of their store, Smokey Row Antiques, which is located at 112 Stephen St. in downtown Lemont.  The store specializes in jewelry, specialty gifts and eclectic home decor. In addition, the Roys conduct estate sales and restore dolls and teddy bears. “I’ve had a passion for antiques since I was a child,” Sue Roy said. “So has Gary. We’ve both always been drawn to history and vintage items.” And the duo is always on the lookout for store merchandise. “We like to take roadtrips and we’ll go to different antique shops or flea markets,” Sue Roy said. “And people will …

Antiques, Canallers Bring History to Life at Street Fair

The third annual Lemont Street Fair, put on by the Lemont Historical Society, featured antique appraisals, reenactments, an art vendor and live music.

The antiques market may be a relic of the past for some, but that didn't stop a steady stream of visitors to the appraisal booth at the Lemont Historical Society's third annual street fair Saturday. In roadshow-style, appraiser and antiques collector David Linetzky, of Riverside, looked over lamps, bric-a-brac, toys and books brought by Lemont residents. The top three valued items were Art Deco-style alabaster lamps ($450),  a 1940s toy train set ($250-$350) and a dainty 1930s  enamel purse with a silver hinge and chain ($150). While the items are valued high, selling them would probably fetch just a third of what they are worth.  "The antiques market is dead," said Linetzky, who closed his store but still buys and sells special items.
