Lemont's Ethan Pocic Nominated for U.S. Army All-American Bowl

The rising senior offensive tackle standout offensive tackle has yet to pick a college, but has already received offers from nearly every major football program in the country.

Lemont High School junior Ethan Pocic—a 6-foot-6, 285-pound offensive lineman—is one of seven Illinois high school football players to be nominated for the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the Chicago Tribune reports. The seven rising seniors were among 400 players across the country nominated for the team. The nominating commitee will ultimately select 90 players to participate in the game on Jan. 5. Pocic is considered one of the top offensive recruits in the state, and has already received offers from nearly every major college football program in the country. Four Lemont Football Players Sign Letters of Intent

Sebastian Koziel, Arnas Laurinaitis, Andrew Manganiello and kicker Josh Young have committed to playing college football beginning in Fall 2012.

Four Lemont High School seniors—defensive linemen Sebastian Koziel, Arnas Laurinaitis, Andrew Manganiello and kicker Josh Young—have committed to playing college football in Fall 2012. The group, who signed National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, joins teammates Kyle Krull and Brad Uher as members of Lemont's Class of 2012 that will play college football. Koziel, Laurinaitis, Manganiello and Young all were key contributors to the success of head coach Eric Michaelsen’s program in recent years. During the 2010 and 2011 seasons, the Indians compiled a 23-2 record, posting back-to-back undefeated regular seasons and South Suburban Conference-Blue Division titles. New Martial Arts School Opens in Lemont

Tiger Kwon, which has locations in Mokena and New Lenox, recently took over the space occupied by YK Martial Arts in Lemont Village Square.

Tiger Kwon's Martial Arts, which has locations in Mokena and New Lenox, opened its doors last month in Lemont Village Square. The studio, located at 1243 State St, was formerly occupied by YK Martial Arts. Tiger Kwon offers training in Taekwondo, Hapkido, Zumba and kickboxing. There are classes for kids and adults of all ages. The children's programs (Little Tigers and Youth) expose students to the culture of Taekwondo and teach the basic techniques, etiquette and terminology associated with martial arts training. Chicago Blaze Rugby Club Celebrates 30th Anniversary

The Lemont-based organization plans to build a new, million-dollar clubhouse next year, and hopes to host the national championship within the next five years.

The Chicago Blaze Rugby Club based in Lemont be celebrated its 30th anniversary May 11-12 with a weekend of games and special events.  The Blaze was formed in 1982 when the Amoco Rugby Club and Windy City Nomads decided to merge their teams.  President of Amoco Pete Thornley along with President of  Windy City George Selimos met in a closed door session and decided to become the Chicago Blaze Rugby Club. The Blaze started playing Division 1 rugby in Chicago and realized that it would be a great idea to have their own property to enjoy the great sport of rugby and the camaraderie of the matches after. In 1985 they were able to acquire 10 acres of farmland in South Suburban Chicago that consisted of a small house, garage, and small barn. …

Hey, baseball fans: There's a new wood-bat team in DuPage County, featuring college-age players. The DuPage County Hounds kick off their first season in the Midwest Collegiate League this June. They will play their home games at the Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex at Benedictine University in Lisle. Lemont High School Runner Qualifies for IHSA State Finals

Senior Elissa Bitterman finished in a four-way tie for runner-up in the high jump at the Class 3A Downers Grove North Sectional on Thursday.

For the second time in three years, Lemont High School senior Elissa Bitterman has qualified for IHSA Class 3A Girls Track and Field State Finals. Bitterman finished in a four-way tie for the runner-up position in the high jump at the IHSA Class 3A Downers Grove North Sectional on Thursday, which earned her a trip to the state finals. The state meet will be contested Friday, May 18, and Saturday, May 19, at O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. Bitterman cleared the 5 feet, 3 inches at the sectional meet; that not only tied her for second place at the event, but also met the minimum qualifying standards for the state finals. Lemont's Annual Quarryman Challenge Set for Saturday

Residents should expect morning street closures; 5K race starts at 7:30 a.m., 10-mile event begins 7:35 a.m.

Hundreds of runners—including Lemont Patch Editor Amanda Luevano—will hit the hilly streets of Lemont on Saturday for the seventh annual Advocate Good Samaritan Quarryman Challenge. The 10-mile and 5K races start and finish in downtown Lemont, weaving through scenic areas of the village throughout both courses. The 5K (3.1 miles) will begin at 7:30 a.m. in front of Village Hall, 418 Main St. The 10-mile race starts five minutes later, at the intersection of Main and Julia streets. Race director Dave Fako said last month that more than 600 people had registered to run. “It’s different and unique,” he said, adding that participants range from elite runners to casual joggers. “We have a nice setting where it’s easy to watch the race from the …

A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them."
