District 113A Board to Consider Staffing Plans, Construction Projects

The Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A Board of Education will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Old Quarry Middle School.

The Board of Education in Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A will discuss on Tuesday a series of summer construction projects and staffing plans for the upcoming year. The school board will consider two staffing plans, one that includes the hiring of 8.6 additional certified staff members and another that includes two additional support staff members. The staffing projections for the 2013-14 school year were included in the district's financial plan, which was approved by the Illinois State Board of Education on May 16. Although the overall staffing number remained the same, the administration has modified the recommended positions based on recent enrollment data and test scores. District 113A Educational Foundation Awards $34K in Grants

The foundation recently awarded 24 grants for the 2013-14 school year.

The Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A Educational Foundation recently awarded 24 grants totalling more than $34,000 for the 2013-2014 school year. Grant awards were selected from 26 proposals submitted by district faculty. All three schools in the district were awarded grants funded in part by a $5,000 Grant Underwriter donation from John Piazza Country Financial and a $15,000 Grant Underwriter donation from Oxbow Midwest Calcining. Additional funding was provided by local businesses, individual donors and fundraising events. 'Peter Pan' Hits the Stage at Lemont High School

The spring musical will run Thursday through Saturday at the Lemont High School Performing Arts Center.

Children of all ages can expect grand, high-flying adventures as they join Peter, Wendy, John, Michael and Tinkerbell on a trip to Neverland, a timeless place where one never can grow old. Lemont High School’s Performing Arts Center will feature "Peter Pan" for nightly performances from Thursday, May 16, through Saturday, May 18. All performances, which will be produced by Terry Redford, will begin at 7 p.m. All tickets are $15, and all seats in the Performing Arts Center—including the balcony and main level—are reserved seats. Lemont Senior Stanwyck Repeats in State Engineering Graphics Top-Five

The Lemont High School squad also won the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering (WYSE) North Central College Sectional with a near-perfect score.

Lemont Preschool Raises $4,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

Students at Happy Hands Preschool got a lesson in bike safety in April as they raised funds for the 21st annual Trike-a-Thon for St. Jude.

Children at Happy Hands Methodist Preschool in Lemont have reason to celebrate as they come close to wrapping up a successful school year.  Together, the nearly 70 students raised $4,042 as part of the 21st annual Trike-a-Thon for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which took place on April 16 and 22. The school has raised more than $120,000 since the program began. St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, founded by entertainer Danny Thomas, is located in Memphis, TN, and has treated children from all over the United States as well as 70 other countries. The Trike-A-Thon a week-long safety curriculum and fundraising program offered by St. Jude. After a week of safety lessons in the classroom, schools designate a day or two for children …

Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy said the girl was charged with disorderly conduct after admitted to writing a threatening message on the school's exterior wall Sunday.

UPDATED, May 8 A middle school girl is facing criminal charges after assuming responsibility for a bomb threat written outside Oakwood School on Sunday, according to Lemont police. Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy confirmed Wednesday that the girl was charged with disorderly conduct and will be tried in Cook County juvenile court.  The girl also faces possible consequences at school. Students who damage school property and/or engage in threatening activities could face suspension or even expulsion, according to the district handbook. Officials in Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A said the student came forward Tuesday and admitted to writing a message in chalk that indicated Oakwood would be bombed May 7. Lemont Mathletes Finish 11th in State Competition

Lemont High School students earned two top-ten finishes at the 2013 Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) State Finals on May 4.

The Lemont High School Mathletes squad competed at the 2013 Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics (ICTM) State Finals on the campus of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign on May 4, and finished 11th in Division 3AA. Lemont, which saw its students earn two top-ten finishes at the event, now has finished among the state’s top 20 in its division five of the last six years. The team placed among the top 20 in all 12 of the competition’s events, which helped it become the recipient of the Richard Rhoad Award as its division’s most improved team. St. Al's/St. Pat's School to Hold Bike Drive for Families in Need

The National Honor Society will be collecting used bikes from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday in the St. Patrick Church parking lot.

The National Honor Society at St. Alphonsus/St. Patrick School in Lemont is collecting used bikes for local families in need. The school will hold a bike drive from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Church Bikes will be distributed to needy families in the Lemont area, organizers said. Cindy Kelly Named New District 113A School Board President

The newly seated board of education voted unanimously Tuesday to make Kelly the new president, Dave Molitor the vice president and newcomer Patrick Kerrigan secretary.

The newly seated Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday to make Cindy Kelly its new president for the upcoming year. Kelly, who has served as board secretary for the past two years, replaces Dave Molitor, who was also up for the position. Molitor was named vice president and newcomer Patrick Kerrigan was named secretary. Kelly was nominated by board member Mike Aurelio, but submitted Molitor as her pick. Molitor delivered a short speech about his capabilities as president and said he hoped to serve another year, but he ultimately voted for Kelly after she had already received votes from the other five board members.
