Happy Hands is Readers' Choice for Favorite Preschool

The school, based out of Lemont United Methodist Church, is tops in Lemont, according to reader votes and reviews.

The readers have spoken, and one local preschool emerged as the most loved in Lemont. In last week's installment of Readers’ Choice — a way for readers to give their favorite local businesses a boost — we took a look at the many wonderful preschools in Lemont. Readers made their picks by voting in our poll, as well as leaving comments and reviews on each business' Patch Places listing and our Facebook page. With the majority percent of the vote, as well as a number of positive comments, the winner is Happy Hands Methodist Preschool. Located at 25 W. Custer St. in Lemont United Methodist Church, Happy Hands offers programs for children ages 3 to 5. It aims to help children develop physically, emotionally, intellectually and socially through…

Breast Feeding: How Old Is Too Old? Mom Talk

When do children become too old for breast milk?

A good friend of ours told the story of how she had to wean her then 2-year-old son off their evening nursing routine. She was deeply saddened but felt it was time. When we first had Liam, I thought that 2 years old seemed extensive. I never expected to nurse him a full 18 months. (A very healthy child, his first antibiotic wasn't until he was 25 months!) The head-turning Time magazine cover of a mom nursing her 3-year-old son also has tongues wagging. How old is too old for a child to breast feed? My husband says if the boy can walk, talk and shave, he's too old. Other friends say they've witnessed drive-by-nursings — when kids run over and pull up their moms' shirts to latch on for a quick drink in between game playing. That's not my …

Dark Shadows Casts a Long Shadow

Johnny Depp delivers a memorable, Van Winkle-esque performance

Has Johnny Depp ever turned in a poor performance? If so, I’ve never seen it. Whether he’s channeling Keith Richards (Pirates of the Caribbean), Hunter S. Thompson (The Rum Diaries), Ed Wood or even Edward Scissorhands, Depp always turns in a wonderful performance, and in Dark Shadows he again demonstrates his remarkable acting prowess. Depp is easily the best actor of his generation, sporting the intelligence and depth of Laurence Olivier, the suave charm of Adolphe Menjou and the humorous potential of Charlie Chaplin. He does whore himself out with the endless Piratestrain of sequels, but hey, in some ways, we all have to sell out somehow. Even Orson Welles pimped wine (when it was time). I arrived at the Cinemark Louis Joliet Theater a …

Tanorexia: Mom Talk

The New Jersey Tanning Mom raises questions about how to parent.

So let's assume that Patricia Krentcil did not bring her 6-year-old daughter into the tanning bed. Her daughter's school nurse reportedly believes otherwise. Her attorney is asking the world not to judge a book by its cover. That's tough to do when this book is leather bound. Setting aside the fact that she looks like a baseball glove with lipstick and a wig, her situation calls to light a number of questions. If we, ourselves, are so misguided about something — regardless of what it may be — that calls into question our own parenting skills. For example, if Krentcil needs to tan for 12 minutes 20 times a month, as the salon owner claims she does, what kinds of messages is she sending to her daughter about appearance and self esteem? Not …
