Ms. Kelly, would love your perspective on permanently moving $2M out of the operations andRead More maintenance fund this year. Why was that done? Could it be that it will ultimately lead the buildings and parking lots go by the wayside so a referendum can hit the ballot to claim "we have no money to fix up the schools. Look, they are falling apart." Suckering the taxpayers for more money won't work. It is already known how this BOE is trying to position another referendum. Maybe we can get the district PR person to address it, eh?
Ann Paul May 9, 2013 at 06:11 pm
I stand corrected. It is the administration not the BOE positioning for another referendum.

As Board President of LHS District 210, I would like to extend my appreciation for all our teachers.Read More I appreciate all their hardwork, and dedication. Their efforts make LHS one of the top performing high schools in the State of Illinois.

Lemont is lucky to have so many teachers and para professionals who support our childrens learningRead More and growth every day. I have witnessed first hand the level of dedication SD113a staff provides and appreciate all they have done for our children.

The entire town should be asking if the punishment for the student who brought a gun to school wasRead More followed according to school policy or did favoritism/nepotism play a role?
Nicki May 15, 2013 at 10:01 am
I agree with Ann Paul. Just think what could happened if it wasn't taken seriously and something didRead More happen. This student should be held accountable for her actions. And with the media involved, her consequences for her actions may actually be followed through. Maybe if the media was notified about 12 & 13 year olds selling drugs and having drugs on school property, we'd all actually be aware of what was going on. That way we as a community would know to sit down with our kids and have a talk or re-evaluate who they are hanging out with. But as it stands right now, nothing has even been said, except what the students are saying. Hopefully any other kid or kids that are thinking about doing something illegal, maybe will think twice after knowing Lemont isn't playing around. You play, you pay. And if the parents are also held accountable, maybe, just maybe, those parents will start actually being parents.

I to agree with you Rob Corse . Hard to believe that an adult didn't think it through beforeRead More forwarding. Then again this may be far fetched, but maybe they did think it through ,and they also had something to do with the threat and the wanted the attention.
Amanda Luevano (Editor) May 7, 2013 at 08:39 pm
Rob, actually the letter was forwarded to the media by the superintendent. This is fairly normalRead More practice for these types of threats.

I would like to thank the teachers, administration and all other faculty/staff members for theirRead More dedication during this time. I am certain that the family members of these adults (along with the Lemont Police and Fire teams) were not very comfortable sending their loved ones to work on a day of uncertainty and a day of fear. They served, educated, fed, calmed and looked over our beloved children while most likely allaying their own fears. Thank you! Leah M. Bielski parent of an Oakwood Student

I admit that I was not aware of this obviously valuable community asset. I intend to learn moreRead More about the center's activities. But I didn't even know where to find it until I visited the linked site. For all of you that are interested, the Lemont Center for the Arts is located in the Lemont Village Square, 1243 State Street, Unit 101. Lemont, IL 60439

JP and Lee, from Ms.Luevano's reporting, there is no mention of blaming the seven school boardRead More members (you do realize Lemont school board has 7 members) for not hiring 5 additional teachers this year. It appears the school district received no direction from the state. If these teachers were added-do you know of the financial impact that would have had for this year and for the five year plan? Is the new reading specialist in the schools considered a new teacher? Lee-besides class size, I know of many parents that are concerned with state of the schools current technology. From my understanding, the school text books are very outdated and I think there is some classes (math)-that don't have enough text books for every student. The computers are also in need of updating-have you ever tried using a computer that is 10 years old? The teachers need resources to teach.

Wow, always unbelievable to read the comments. Please keep in mind the purpose of a school districtRead More is to educate the children. Yes, public education is responsible for educating all the children, at various academic levels and with multiple special needs. In order for teachers and administration to educate they need appropriate resources such as technology and curriculums. The administration has to find a balance of lowering class size while replacing technology, curriculum, and maintaining buildings. District 113a teachers have done a great job of educating the children with limited resources. Additional staff such as reading specialists and counselors may not lower class size, however, it will give the children that need those services extra resources.

According to Mary Pollard: "JP, Supporting someone and allying with someone are two differentRead More things. Deitemyer (#141) and Kerrigan (#145) decided to run on their own. They have clearly stated they have no alliances and will chart their own course. They are not "my candidates" or any other board members' candidates, they are their own candidates who have won the support of a variety of people in town based on their own merit. The slate of three have clearly stated their alliance with 2 sitting board members, who not only presented at a slate-only "public" forum but also attacked a fellow board member at that forum. In a town that needs to move forward positively and collaborate." Really no alliances? Is that why Cindy Kelly collected petition signatures for Kerrigan?

Lee, I have quite a bit on my plate these days covering Downers Grove and Lemont and didn't get homeRead More until about 11 p.m. so the story will be written this afternoon. Thanks for your patience!

How about just a quick answer then since I wasn't at the meeting and I DID sit on one of the focusRead More groups to provide input for the strategic plan. The Reporter seemed to say that computers will be purchased before more teachers are hired to reduce class sizes. Reducing class sizes was the absolute number one priority at the community focus group I attended last fall. So the question remains--more teachers or new computers? Are there any new teacher hires planned??? Simple yes or no here will do.
