Position Description
Voters will be casting votes for Democrat, Republican and independent candidates running for their respective party nominations in the Illinois 3rd Congressional District.
The redrawn 3rd District map signed into law by Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn in June 2011 encompasses Oak Lawn, LaGrange and Western Springs, and portions of Palos, Orland Park and Tinley Park.
The 3rd District gained all of Lemont, Homer Glen, Lockport Township, Romeoville and a small portion of west Orland Park in the district remap.
Lost in the redistricting were Riverside and Westchester, as well as parts of Berwyn, Brookfield and LaGrange Park.
By law, the optimal population for a U.S. Congressional District is 720,000. Under the old map, the 3rd District had a population of 648,000, but increases by 70,000 in the new district lines.
U.S. Rep Dan Lipinski (D), son of long-time House Representative Bill Lipinski, is being challenged by Republican candidate Richard L. Grabowski.
