Have a Polar Adventure This Weekend

3 Things to Do in Chicago: Coyotes and dog sledding on Northerly Island; run the 'Santa Hustle' and go on an art treasure hunt.

Go on a (free) polar adventure

The weather is looking like it will be pretty polar on Saturday when the Chicago Park District hosts a Polar Adventure Day at Northerly Island from noon to 4 p.m. The free event features birds of prey and coyotes, a dog sledding demo, arts and crafts and a special “ice fishing” area for toddlers. (We presume the quotes mean they won’t be sent to an actual hole in the ice.) The first 500 people there get a free cup of hot cocoa. The event itself is free, though parking costs $3, cash only.

Do the Santa Hustle

Also on Saturday with a North Polar theme, there’s the fifth annual Santa Hustle 5K at Soldier Field. All runners and walkers get a Santa hat and beard and a Santa-looking dri-fit shirt. There’s also an afterparty. The race raises money for the Fathers Helping Fathers nonprofit. The race starts at 9 a.m. Registration is $50.

Go on a treasure hunt at the Art Institute

If you’re looking for an indoor activity with kids, check out Sunday’s treasure hunt and tea part at the Art Institute. Kids go on a hunt through the museum with an activity book. They’ll also make a mask and then enjoy a holiday tea party. There are three start times: 10:45 a.m., noon and 1:30 p.m. The cost is $30 for members, $35 for non members, $15 for kids 2 and older and free for those under 2 years old.
