Whiz Kids: Lemont Brownie Troop 259

Local Girl Scouts are making a difference through a number of service projects, including a mitten drive this fall.

Each week, Lemont Patch will seek suggestions from readers for individual kids, youth groups, teens and even sports teams that wow us with their accomplishments.

Lemont Brownie Troop 259

Names: Emmy Horn, Katie Barry, Megan Hendry, Sophia Cutinello, Mikaela Geraghty, Daleigh Johnson, Gracie Meloni, Claire Dombrowski, Brooke Bishop, McKenna Phelan, Shannon McCleary, Kristen McClatchy, Molly Stood

Ages: 7 and 8

Accomplishment: As Brownie Girl Scouts, the girls of Troop 259 love community service. This fall, they have focused their efforts on a mitten drive for Lemont families in need and the My Joyful Heart organization in Mokena.

The troop is collecting new mittens, gloves, hats and scarves now through Nov. 30. Donations can be dropped off at any of the following locations:

  • , 1151 State St.
  • , 50 E. Wend St.
  • , 1100 State St.
  • , 16050 W. 127th St.

Keys to Awesomeness: In addition to the mitten drive, Troop 259 has participated in a number of community service projects, including Feed My Starving Children, a coloring book collection for the Earl Anderson Foundation and a spring food drive for .

Their troop leader, Robyn Horn, says, "They are a driven group of second-graders that are always willing to help out people in need ... They're really trying hard to make their community a better place!"

Thanks to a partnership with Nancy's Pizza, each Lemont Patch Whiz Kid will receive a certificate good for for one small Super Thin Crust cheese pizza.
