Blackhawks Super Fans: Playoff Commentary Turns Lemont Siblings into WGN Stars

Peter and Gabby Marzano have become regulars on the morning news show thanks to their post-game recaps on YouTube.

Peter Marzano was just 14 when he decided he wanted to try his hand at NHL commentary.

The Lemont teen had been an avid sports fan for years, and had religiously followed the Chicago Blackhawks since 2008. He spent almost every night watching ESPN and the NHL Network, listening intently to his favorite sportscasters as they recapped games around the league.

By 2010—the year the Blackhawks captured their first Stanley Cup since 1961—Marzano had become a walking encyclopedia on his favorite team. He memorized game stats and specific plays, and could speak intelligently about any player on the roster.

Following Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, in which the Blackhawks beat the San Jose Sharks 2-1, Marzano was inspired to offer his own commentary.

"I went upstairs, put on a suit and tie, and asked my dad if he would record a video of me for YouTube," he said. "It's just something I wanted to do my whole life, so I figured I'd just give it a shot."

As Peter and his dad prepared to shoot the first video, Peter's 11-year-old sister Gabby decided to get in on the act. She put on a dress, and joined her brother for their very own post-game show.

"I wasn't sure what to expect, but they were awesome," said Pete Marzano, Pete and Gabby's dad. "They're both able to talk about the games so well, and Gabby provided a little bit of comic relief."

After only a week on YouTube, Peter and Gabby's video caught the eye of a producer at WGN Morning News. The duo was invited to appear on the show to go over highlights with sports anchor Pat Tomasulo.

It didn't take long for the news team to dub Peter and Gabby "the Blackhawks Super Fans."

"It was kind of a dream come true to be on TV talking about the Hawks," Peter said. "We had a great time."

Since 2010, the Marzanos have recorded more than two dozen videos for YouTube, many of which are featured on WGN during the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Pete Marzano said it's Peter's impressive knowledge and Gabby's knack for comedy that make the videos so popular.

"Peter is definitely more serious, and really does his homework," Pete Marzano said. "Gabby is really never serious, so she balances him out. But they are both hilarious—even more so when they do these videos together."

When they're not watching hockey, Peter and Gabby keep busy with school and variety of extracurricular activities.

Peter, who recently turned 16, is a sophomore at . He has participated in Speech and Scholastic Bowl, and served as a theater tech. He is very active in the school band, playing both bass clarinet and the tenor saxophone.

Gabby, 13, is a seventh-grader at , where she has participated in Student Council, softball and cheerleading.

While Peter hopes to become a hockey analyst or join a drum and bugle corps when he gets older, Gabby's interests lies in the kitchen.

"I love to bake," she said. "I never had any interest in being on TV or anything before the Blackhawks videos, but I really enjoy it now. I love Cake Boss, so it would be a dream to work for Buddy or to have a cooking show."

With the 2012 Stanley Cup playoffs officially underway, Peter and Gabby are preparing for a busy few weeks of game previews and recaps. They are slated to appear on WGN the morning after each Blackhawk game, Pete Marzano said.

The Blackhawks will take on the Phoenix Coyotes in Game 1 of the Western Conference quarterfinals at 9 p.m. (CST) Thursday.

What are the Marzanos predicting for the first series? Gabby thinks the Hawks will win in five, while Peter thinks they'll take it in six.
