Lemont's Chicago Blackhawks Super Fans Discuss Historic Season on WGN

Lemont's very own Chicago Blackhawks "Super Fans" appeared on WGN News on Wednesday morning to offer their take on the team's historic season.

Lemont High School junior Peter Marzano, 16, and his sister, Gabby, 14, have become WGN regulars over the years after a producer found videos of their Blackhawks commentary on YouTube. 

Although they typically appear on television during the NHL playoffs, clips of Peter and Gabby's latest video were featured Wednesday morning, just hours after the Blackhawks beat the Minnesota Wild 5-3. The win brought the team's record to 20-0-3, and marked their 23rd straight game without a regulation loss—an NHL record.

"You don't see teams like this very often," Peter Marzano said of the 2013 Blackhawks. "In fact, every team that has started the season with just 13 (games) in a row earning a point has won the Stanley Cup. The Chicago Blackhawks are at 23 to start the season, and 29 if you count the last six games from last year."

On Wednesday night, the Blackhawks beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 and extended their streak to 24, or 30 counting last season.

Although Gabby urged her older brother not to "jinx" the team's chances, Peter is optimistic about the Blackhawks' playoff outlook.

"I absolutely think the Blackhawks will be Stanley Cup champions," he said.

Peter was just 14 when he decided he wanted to try his hand at NHL commentary. He had been an avid sports fan for years, and had religiously followed the Chicago Blackhawks since 2008. 

By 2010—the year the Blackhawks captured their first Stanley Cup since 1961—Marzano had become a walking encyclopedia on his favorite team. He memorized game stats and specific plays, and could speak intelligently about any player on the roster.

Following Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, in which the Blackhawks beat the San Jose Sharks 2-1, Marzano was inspired to offer his own commentary.

"I went upstairs, put on a suit and tie, and asked my dad if he would record a video of me for YouTube," he said. "It's just something I wanted to do my whole life, so I figured I'd just give it a shot."

As Peter and his dad prepared to shoot the first video, Gabby, then 11, decided to get in on the act. She put on a dress, and joined her brother for their very own post-game show.

"I wasn't sure what to expect, but they were awesome," said Pete Marzano, Pete and Gabby's dad. "They're both able to talk about the games so well, and Gabby provided a little bit of comic relief."

After only a week on YouTube, Peter and Gabby's video caught the eye of a producer at WGN Morning News. The duo was invited to appear on the show to go over highlights with sports anchor Pat Tomasulo.

It didn't take long for the news team to dub Peter and Gabby "the Blackhawks Super Fans."

"It was kind of a dream come true to be on TV talking about the Hawks," Peter said. "We had a great time."
