Lemont Lacrosse Wins Season Opener

The team made history Wednesday night as they played their first-ever varsity contest.

The Lemont Indians Lacrosse team made history Wednesday night as they played through snow and freezing temperatures to win their first-ever varsity contest.

The team, which sits atop the South Suburban Conference with a 1-0 record, edged out Lincoln Way Combined by a score of 6-5 in their season opener at Lincoln-Way East.

Lemont sophomore Tom Griffin scored the winning goal with 37 seconds left in the game. Junior David Johnson scored three goals for the Indians, while senior Clayton Fejedelem and sophomore Mike Malloy each contributed one.

Junior goalkeeper Mark Marek had seven saves and picked up an assist for Lemont. Griffin and juniors Anthony Cassaza and Joe Rimbo each had assists.  

Other members of the Indians Lacrosse team are: juniors Mike Walus, Brian McMahon, Mike Baffoe, Matt Kowalczyk, Dean Kulis, Zach Stronach, Tyler Zaremski and Liam McNicholas, and seniors Tyler Larek and Hunter Freebeck.

After the game, Lemont coach Tom Haggerty said to his team, "If I died tomorrow, I'd still be smiling. I've never been prouder of any team than I am of you guys tonight. This is Lemont Indians Lacrosse."  

The Indians will play their home opener Friday against Sandburg.
