Lemont High School Wins Second SouthtownStar Cup

School honored Sunday for having best overall athletic program during the 2010-2011 academic year.

More congratulations are in order for the athletes of Lemont High School.

After a year of outstanding performances and state playoff appearances, the school was honored by our friends in print, the SouthtownStar, as having the top athletic program for the 2011-2012 school year.

The newspaper announced Sunday that Lemont had captured its second SouthtownStar Cup, finishing ahead of 50 other Southland schools.

The winner is chosen based on a system that awards points for "state, regional sectional and conference success per sport, weighs those points based on the number of Southland schools participating in each sport and averages the total over the number of sports in which an individual school competes, according to the SouthtownStar website.

Lemont averaged 4.283 points to finish ahead of Sandburg (3.883) and Mount Carmel (3.014).

According to the SouthtownStar, the majority of the Indians' points came from a , four other top-five finishes in state playoffs (including and ) and seven South Suburban Blue championships.

“This speaks volumes about the community,” athletic director John Young told the SouthtownStar. “At an early age, there are a lot of opportunities for kids to compete, and not just in one sport but multiple sports. There’s a lot of interest in travel organizations. It’s a reflection of the high school.

“There’s a hometown culture here that I think permeates through the athletic and academic part of it. Everybody wants to pull together to achieve a common result and make that a positive experience.”
