Lemont High Bass-Fishing Duo Win Sectional Tournament

In the school's fifth year of competition, a duo out-dueled Hinsdale Central and York and earned a berth in the IHSA state finals.

The Lemont High School bass-fishing team duo of junior Jake Lepczynski and sophomore Jack Lambert won the IHSA Des Plaines Conservation Area Sectional at Braidwood Lake on Friday, earning a berth in the 2013 IHSA Bass Fishing State Finals.

With coach Dave LaBarbera driving the boat and junior Vince Sciacca as alternate, Lepczynski and Lambert caught three fish weighing 7.17 bounds, beating out teams from Hinsdale Central (two fish, 5.98 pounds) and York (three fish, 5.85 pounds.)

The sectional competition was one of several that was forced by the recent heavy rain and flooding to change location, and the state finals, originally set for the upcoming weekend, have also been postponed. Lepcynski and Lambert will travel all the way downstate to Carlyle Reservoir in Clinton County.

This is the fifth year of bass fishing competition in IHSA (as an "activity," not a "sport,") and also the fifth in which Lemont High School has fielded a team, previously advancing to state finals in 2010 with Chris Walter and Matt Burns.

There are now 237 schools statewide who field teams; 66 will compete in the state finals.
