Lemont Cheerleaders Advance to Final Round of State Finals

The three-time defending champions will compete at 11 a.m. Saturday for the IHSA Medium Division title.

The  cheerleading squad is still on the hunt for a fourth consecutive state title after turning in a solid first-day performance at the 2012 IHSA state finals Friday.

The Indians placed fifth among 25 Medium Division teams, which earned them a spot in the event's final round Saturday at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington, IL.

Lemont posted a first-round score of 85.78. They accumulated the third-best raw score (87.78) in the division, but 2.00 points were taken away for deductions.

Leading the Medium Division teams were Oak Forest (88.18), St. Viator (87.48), Vernon Hills (86.50) and Antioch (86.06). Only 10 squads advanced to the second day of competition.

The finals will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the awards ceremony to follow at 1:15 p.m. Lemont is scheduled to compete at 11:15 a.m.

Lemont has appeared in seven consecutive IHSA State Finals. The team placed third in 2006, and was runner-up in 2007 and 2008 before winning three straight championships in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Cheerleading is the only program at Lemont High School .

Led by coach Brittany Glowa, the Indians qualified for the 2012 IHSA State Finals by at the Joliet Central Sectional on Jan. 28. Lemont's score of 83.00 trailed only IHSA Sectional Champion and fellow South Suburban Conference school Oak Forest, which totaled 87.67. Two other SSC schools—Tinley Park (82.83) and Bremen (80.57)—followed in third and fourth.
