Girls Soccer: Lemont Routs Morgan Park to Begin Postseason

Five goals in less than 14 minutes initiate 7-0 rout in Class 2A state tournament.

The contrasts between Subria Whitaker and Kelly Fritz could not have been greater Tuesday afternoon in Lemont.

The former, a junior goalkeeper for Morgan Park, was harassed continually by Lemont during the Indians’ 7-0 Class 2A girls soccer regional semifinal at the LHS Sports Complex.

Fritz, meanwhile, did not have to face a shot from the Mustangs.

“I was falling asleep back there, to be honest,” Fritz quipped.

The Indians (18-4), the top seed of their regional, part of the Lincoln-Way West sectional grouping, will face either South Suburban Conference rival Oak Forest or Bremen for the championship Friday evening at 6 p.m.

Fourth-seeded Morgan Park had its season end at 5-7-1.

Forty-six seconds were all Lemont sophomore forward Wendy Mazur needed to ring the bell for the Indians.

Mazur beat Whitaker with a quick shot inside the left post to give the Indians and Fritz all the offense they would need.

“You never want to go into a game thinking it’s going to be one-sided,” Mazur said. “But once we got that first goal, it looked like that’s what was going to happen.”

Lemont did not wait long to add to the first-half goal extravaganza.

Taking complete advantage of the Mustangs’ inability to clear their goal area, Lemont tallied five times in the first 15 minutes.

Reilly Sullivan scored from point-blank range 90 seconds after the Indians’ opening goal, and Mazur assisted Kim Jerantowski on a pair of first-half goals to break the Mustangs’ spirits.

“We’re in a rebuilding process,” Morgan Park coach Santos Marchan said. “[Not being able to clear the defensive end] was the biggest problem. We had a sweeper who did not show up today [due to illness].”

Lemont junior midfielder Amber Trick notched the Indians’ fifth first-half goal with 26:42 remaining.

The carnage actually could have been far worse.

Lemont peppered the Mustangs’ post and crossbar a combined five times;  Whitaker also made several commendable saves for the Chicago Public League school as Lemont attempted 22 shots in the first half.

“We got to business, knew what we needed to do,” said Morgan Rex, who scored the Indians’ final first-half goal with a 15-yard blast to the upper-right corner of the Mustangs’ net.

The Indians’ seven-goal spread at the intermission meant a truncated second half.
Playing with virtually an entire unit of reserves, Lemont concentrated on keeping the 20-minute clock constantly running.

“[The girls] know not to embarrass another team,” Lemont coach Rick Prangen said. “You want to show some class. You knew after five minutes it was going to be this kind [slaughter-rule] of game.”
