Football: Lemont Overcomes Tough First Half Against Richards

Lemont 28, Richards 6: A late first-half TD sparks the Indians, keeps them undefeated going into conference play.

The Indians, flying high after two shutout wins, received a formidable defensive test in their final non-conference game against the Richards Bulldogs on Friday.

Some halftime adjustments and solid, fundamental play on offense put the Indians over the top with a 28-6 win.

“They (Richards) really came out and played very tough against us defensively. They were very aggressive against us on offense,” Indians coach Eric Michaelsen said.

The Bulldogs (1-2) drew first blood to give themselves a 6-0 lead. The Indians (3-0) struggled to find any kind of traction on offense and had a tough time on defense containing athletic Bulldogs quarterback Tommy Mister. A late touchdown in the first half put them up 7-6 heading into the break.

“First thing we did was adjust our defense to contain the quarterback,” Michaelsen said. “He (Fister) pretty much chewed us up in the first half and the adjustments really helped. We got some shorter fields and it helped us.”

Michaelsen, however, knows the real test begins next week when they open conference play against Thornton Fractional South in Lansing on Sept. 16."

"Many papers have picked T.F. South to win the conference, so we need to be ready," Michaelsen said.
