Boys Track and Field: Indians Debut Youthful Exuberance At Plainfield South
Jared Bruns hits a personal best in the shot put to highlight Lemont's first boys meet.
Head coach Brett Nelson acknowledged the task at hand for the Lemont High School boys track and field team going into the 2011 campaign.
With a pair of state qualifiers sharing the conference standings with the Indians, Nelson said he knows what it takes for his squad to be competitive going forward.
"It's all uphill for us," Nelson said, assessing the situation during Saturday's meet at Plainfield South High School. "We'll do well in field events and we have some good distance kids."

The aforementioned uphill battle began with a decent enough start for the Indians. Lemont's first meet of the season was highlighted by Jared Bruns' toss in the shot put. Bruns put forth a personal best attempt that measured 48-feet, 7-inches, which was good enough to win the competition.
Sophomore Justin Stanwick also cleared nine feet in the pole vault, which impressed Nelson in the season opener.

Nelson said he looked at the first meet as the base for what the team would do in the weeks and months to come. The building blocks of the season included hoping to see how a young team responded during its first meet.
While the coach wasn't all too concerned with times at this point in the season, knowing where young student-athletes stood after one day could be considered a nice starting point for what may come in the future.
"This is a tough meet for us, but it's our first of the year," Nelson said. "We'll get our marks and move on from here."
